Arizona Women Volunteers, in with partnership with national Casting for Recovery, have scheduled two weekend retreats, May 18-20 (apply by March 9) or Oct. 5-7 (apply by July 27), at Whispering Pines Resort in Pinetop-Lakeside for women who are or have been breast-cancer victims.

The retreats are free and include lodging, meals and professional fly-fishing instruction.

BACKGROUND

"It began as a simple idea: give women a therapeutic technique to speed their recovery by exercising the soft muscle tissue damaged by radiation and/or surgery," coordinator Kitty Wimelt said in an e-mail. "Combine this with counseling and education provided by trained professionals, all in a retreat setting away from the stresses of home, work, and family. While other breast-cancer programs pursued research, Casting for Recovery, knowing that survivors had few resources to address the medical and emotional issues they experienced at home and in their workplace, decided to focus on the road to recovery."

RETREAT ACTIVITIES

"Women who participated in these retreats discovered they could learn a fun and exciting new activity in a setting where they could express their fears, have their questions answered, and call on the experiences of others making the same journey," Wimelt said.

The 2?-day retreat includes formal instruction in the basics of fly casting and related issues, and psychosocial events as well as medical education that focus on helping participants "to open up and explore their own recovery process."

SIGNING UP

Only 14 women can be accommodated at any one retreat.
