Nokia announces 808 PureView: Belle OS, 4-inch display, 41-megapixel camera(!)

Remember that Nokia PureView tease from a few days ago? Well, suddenly it all makes sense. We are indeed looking at an imaging flagship phone and a true successor to the N8. It's called the 808 PureView and it's expected to reach Europe in the next quarter for a price of 450 Euros. Before we move on to its craziest feature -- the camera, of course! -- let's run down the other key specs: The OS is Symbian Belle; the engine is a 1.3GHz single-core chip; the display is 4-inches corner to corner but its resolution is a Nokia-style 360 x 640 (nHD). There's 512MB of RAM and 16GB of onboard storage that is thankfully expandable via microSD. A Pentaband modem increases the chances of getting a signal while globe-trotting, while data speeds will top out at plain HSPA 14.4Mbps. Now that Carl Zeiss-lensed camera: it handles continuous-focus 1080p, but is claimed to have an incredible resolution of over 41-megapixels when shooting stills -- or 34-megapixels for 16:9 images. It's achieved by some clever sub-pixel interpolation jiggery-pokery that basically entails five pixels being merged into one, but we'll dig deeper very soon. It's expected to arrive in May at a price of €450.

Colleton County community suffers damage from tornado

COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC)- The National Weather Service has canceled a tornado watch for Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton and Dorchester counties. The tornado warnings earlier issued for Dorchester and Colleton counties have been also been?canceled.

According to the NWS, earlier in the day, a possible tornado was reported by police in Islandton in Colleton County around 5:06 p.m. Chief Barry McRoy of the Colleton County Fire and Rescue Department says crews responded to the 500 block of Jamison Dr. for damage due to the storm.

Emergency officials reported that a home had been destroyed in that area along with two other homes suffering damage. No injuries were reported.

Weather officials say houses near the area?were also damaged and power lines were reported down in that area with crews working to re-establish power to those affected.

Winds are expected to be very gusty today ahead of an approaching storms system. Winds are already breezy out of the southwest around 10 to 15 mph, but will get stronger by mid-day into the afternoon.

Winds should increase up to 15 to 25 with gusts approaching 40 to 45mph, especially on the bridges and elevated roads. Use extreme care if you are in a high profile or larger vehicle and hold on to that steering wheel.

A strong front is approaching from the west and storms will develop ahead of the system in a warm and unstable atmosphere. The gusty winds will bring plenty of moisture up from the south and that combined with the daytime heating will provide the fuel needed for storms to become severe at times.

Once the storms are off the coast late Friday night, we will see temperatures fall and clouds clearing into Saturday morning. Overnight temperatures will fall back into the mid to lower 40's. Plenty of sunshine returns for much of your weekend.

Lady Griz declaw the Cats, 77-59 | Pet Pro Plus

Locked in a tense back-and-forth tussle with its archrival, Montana used its muscle in the middle to overwhelm Montana State down the stretch Saturday.

The Lady Griz went on a 16-0 run that started with 8:18 remaining to break open a close game and secure a season sweep of the Cats with a 77-59 win in front of 3,924 fans at Dahlberg Arena.

Montana moved to 9-5 in the Big Sky Conference, keeping alive its hopes for a No. 2 seed in the league tournament in March.

The significance of the sweep was not lost on Lady Griz forward Jordy Sullivan, a Sidney native who played some of her best basketball during Montana?s game-defining surge.

?The Cats are tough, so I?m just proud of our team the way we went out and stayed solid the whole time,? said the sophomore, who scored half of Montana?s points in its 16-0 run.

?The emotions are so high and everyone is going crazy and I?m losing it and people are like, ?Calm down.? Clutch time comes, here comes postseason soon, so it?s ?All right, everyone take their role.? It seems like that?s what we?re doing. Whatever way we can get the win, I?m down.?

Montana State coach Tricia Binford had nothing but praise for the Lady Griz, who hit 44.1 percent of their shots (26 for 59) in improving to 16-11 overall.

?It?s hard to tell my team a lot of things in the locker room when Montana just played a really good game,? she said. ?They had some players step up and had some great performances.

?(UM forward Katie) Baker, I think, is playing like an MVP candidate right now. It?s tough when you have to go man-to-man early and you?re not creating a lot of opportunities with some steals. We had our typical turnover count (16). When they?re only at nine, it?s not helping us with possessions. We need to give ourselves more opportunities.?

Binford?s team had every reason to believe it could win for the third straight time at Dahlberg when Katie Bussey nailed a bucket with nine minutes left to give the Cats a 53-51 lead. Little did she realize MSU would score only two more baskets the rest of the way, one coming on an unlikely bank shot by Bussey from beyond the arc.

?I thought our defense was good and they went a little cold, too,? said Montana coach Robin Selvig, whose team played zone most of the afternoon. ?Late in the game they had to take some bad shots because they had to hurry. We were fortunate they missed some shots.?

Sullivan kick-started Montana?s surge with a strong post move that led to a game-tying basket with 8:18 left. After a turnover by Montana State, Lady Griz guard and Bozeman native Kellie Cole was fouled taking the ball to the rim. MSU went in the penalty and fell behind 55-53 on Cole?s foul shots. Montana scored the next 12 points to pull away.

Fourteen of Montana?s last 24 points came from the line. In between Sullivan had two buckets and Kenzie De Boer, Torry Hill and Tianna Ware each had one. Ware?s fastbreak basket with three seconds left brought the crowd to its feet ? a storybook way for her to finish her senior season.

?That was nice,? Selvig said. ?Ti didn?t get very many minutes. But I think if any people watched her video piece before (the game) you can understand why we think the world of her. It was a nice way to finish.?

Baker led a quartet of Lady Griz scoring in double figures with 20 points. She also had a game-high nine rebounds.

?It?s really cool we all played well tonight as a team,? Baker said. ?Jordy (Sullivan) had the great post moves that got us going and from there we didn?t look back.

?Our heart rate wasn?t going like, ?Oh my gosh they could come back,? because we felt like we had this game. We put our trust in what Coach told us and played solid defense.?

Joining Baker in double figures were De Boer with 15 points, Sullivan with 13 and Torry Hill with 12 to go along with five assists. Bussey scored a team-high 16 points for the Cats, who fell to 9-6, 17-10.

?

Notes: Montana held a 23-6 advantage in points off turnovers and a 26-18 edge in points in the paint ? The Lady Griz also enjoyed a 16-11 edge in second-chance points and a 26-18 advantage in bench points ? The Lady Griz will be in Pocatello, Idaho, for the Big Sky tourney as a result of Idaho State beating Eastern Washington on Saturday.

Wakefield Rhubarb, food and drink festival

This weekend is the annual rhubarb, food and drink festival held in Wakefield. It's a great event to attend, lots to see and do, plenty of free foods to sample and lots of local food producers selling their wares.Oldroyds farm in Carlton,Lofthouse, is the UK's leading producer of Yorkshire forced rhubarb and you can actually go on tours of the rhubarb sheds and it is reputed that you may even be able to hear the rhubarb growing! I haven't been on the tour so I can't vouch for that but I do like rhubarb, being a fairly recent convert, so we decided to pop along and see what was on offer.
You can just make out the lovely cathedral spire behind the food demonstration marquee.

As you can see we bought a lot of rhubarb products, not all are for us though, we got some things for our parents too.I find cupcakes to be quite sickly (I know they are all in vogue but I find them a bit claggy sometimes, all that gooey icing!) but the rhubarb in the cake mix was just sharp enough to cut through the sweetness and they tasted divine! We couldn't resist sampling the local beer, I am a real ale fan anyway and thought the rhubarb bitter was just gorgeous. You could smell the fruit in the beer and it had a real kick to it.
Even the pork pie was delicious (and I do not profess to be a big pork pie fan) with the hint of rhubarb.
Diet- what diet?

LOS ANGELES -- A substitute teacher in the nation's second-largest school district was investigated three times for allegations of sexual misconduct with students before he quit in 2007 and started teaching in?another district, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The teacher, identified as 45-year-old George Hernandez, was never arrested or charged in the Los Angeles Unified School District cases.

The Los Angeles Times reported?that when the third investigation was completed, Hernandez quit teaching in Los Angeles and started working for the Inglewood Unified School District.

Hernandez was charged with child molestation but he fled and is considered a fugitive.

"This guy should not have been kept in the district," Kathleen Carroll, an attorney who worked for the state Commission on Teacher Credentialing, told the Times on Wednesday. "This is an outrage."

In recent weeks, several Los Angeles school district employees -- including?two former Miramonte Elementary School teachers?-- have been accused of lewd conduct. One of the former teachers, Mark Berndt, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of lewd conduct involving more than 20 students.

This Saturday February 25th is the K2 Bumps Callenge for Breast Cancer Awareness?at Taos, NM. This event is like a walk-a-thon, except instead of walking around a flat boring high school track participants will be raging as many runs down the infamous Al?s Run under Taos?s Chair 5 as possible in 4 hours. ?Al?s is 1800 vert of mean and I am sure that we are all going to be really tired by the end of 4 hours of sprinting down steep moguls as fast as possible. I am a big fan of the main benefactor of this event and I would guess that most guys and gals out are also.?

A Breast Cancer

That is right, ?we ?will be tired. ?I will be heading down to Taos to give my good friend Joe Augusten a run for his money in this event. Joe is guaranteeing victory and is backing it up with his own money. To give him a little more motivation and competition I figured the least I could do was dust off the old mogul skills and drive down. We are thinking that 16+ runs is totally possible, with a stretch goal of 20 being talked about.?All donations will go towards two breast cancer charity organizations.

Please contact me asap if you are interested in pledging for the awesome charity event. You can donate a dollar amount per run, or just a flat fee. Please hit me up at Daryn@unoffiicialnetworks.com asap! ?Thanks!

UGA pinpoints important factors in workplace safety - Athens, GA ...

Each year in the U.S., about 6,000 workers die on the job, and millions are injured.

According to a recent University of Georgia study, authored by workplace safety depends on whether:

  1. ???? workers think management emphasizes workplace safety; and
  2. ???? business policies result in interference with family demands.

"We've known for some time that certain occupations are more dangerous than others due to a variety of physical and other hazards," said UGA professor Dave DeJoy. "But in the last 20 years, there has been growing evidence that management and organizational factors also play a critical role. That is, actions taken or not taken at the organizational level can either set the stage for injuries or help prevent them."

DeJoy coauthored the study? with Todd Smith, a recent graduate of the Health Promotion and Behavior doctoral program in the UGA College of Public Heallth.

They examined nine factors potentially affecting workplace safety: management-employee relations, participation, safety climate, work-family interference, job content, organizational effectiveness, advancement potential, resource adequacy and supervisor support.

"Most prior research on organizational factors has focused on single occupations or single organizations," says DeJoy. "There has been a clear need to examine these factors across a diverse array of occupations and employment circumstances."

A failure of management

In one of their more interesting findings, they determined that when a worker perceives his or her work environment as safe (as one where management emphasizes on-the-job safety), it can reduce injuries by as much 32 percent. Moreover, businesss that place minimal constraints on worker performance and that run in a smooth and effective manner can reduce injuries by 38 percent.

"Injury is a failure of management,? says DeJoy. ?Organizations who blame individuals for injuries do not create a positive safety climate."

Smith, too, emphasized the organizational factor in safety: "We can design the best safety controls, but they must be maintained, and that falls on management. Enacted policies and procedures?not formalized ones but those acted upon?define a climate of safety."

Home-workplace safety conflicts

The study also found that conflict between family and job demands can increase injuries by as much as 37 percent.

"We used to think work was one thing and family was another,? says DeJoy, ?but now there is a realization that work-life balance affects performance and productivity."

The results of the study were published online in January in a paper entitled up ?Occupational Injury in America: An analysis of risk factors using data from the General Social Survey (GSS)? and will appear in the March issue of the Journal of Safety Research.

Improving Your Home For Yourself And ... - Somerset Hills Doors

Improving Your Home For Yourself And Potential Buyers

Your home is comfortable and you are glad to stay in it for now, but there may be some improvements that your family will appreciate.? Also, if housing prices improve, or if you need to move, you want to know which upgrades could add to the value of your home if you do decide to sell.? Check the following tips to see which ones can help you.

The kitchen is the most worked-in room of your house.? It may also be the most lived-in room, if you eat at a kitchen table.? Your kitchen needs to be functional.? But you also want it to be beautiful.? It is also crucial to re-sale value.? Buyers often are most influenced by whether they like your kitchen or not.? Are the appliances up-to-date and adequate in size?? Are the counters in good shape and durable?? Are the sinks functional?? Is there a dishwasher?? Those who enjoy cooking, especially, will place great emphasis on the kitchen when buying a home.? Making sure your kitchen is both practical and beautiful will definitely increase the value of your home and its appeal to buyers.

Depending on the size of your family, an extra bathroom may be the most appreciated addition you can make.? When everyone is getting ready for work or school in the morning, another bathroom can reduce the stress level and help everyone get out of the house on time.? It will also help when you have guests staying with you.? You will need to look at the plumbing outlay in your home to see if there is a place where it is practical to add a bathroom.? But even if it is in the basement, it can be a valuable addition. However, you will want to take into account the cost of hiring a professional plumber.

If your home is small, adding a finished area in the basement or attic enlarges your home and makes it more valuable.? A finished basement can be a space where your teenagers can play their music without disturbing others. It can be a game room or entertainment room, adding to the enjoyment you find in your home.? The extra living space in the basement or attic will definitely increase the value of your home and its appeal to a large family.? It may also be work you can accomplish as a do-it-yourself project.

Installing windows that are efficient at keeping out cold and heat will definitely pay off in lower energy bills.? The salesman you talk to should be able to give you a projection of how long it will take the new windows to pay for themselves. Even better, they may qualify you for a tax credit. Financially, new energy star windows are a good deal.? They are also something to brag about to prospective buyers.

Adding insulation in the attic may be an easy decision to make.? Again, a professional should be able to estimate the new ?R? value and what it will save you in heating and cooling costs. Make sure your attic ventilation is adequate also. It may be a job you can do yourself.? But it is a good idea to start with a professional opinion on where you should add insulation, how much, and the pay-off in energy costs.

A new deck is not a necessity, but it can add greatly to pleasurable time at home.? It is an add-on that will certainly appeal to buyers.? It should add to your home?s value, though it may not pay for itself as improved energy efficiency does.? Still, it is worthwhile if it increases your own enjoyment of your home.

These are the basic areas you want to consider if you are contemplating a home improvement project.? Evaluate them in terms of your family?s needs.? Priority should go to projects that improve your own enjoyment of your home and also add to its re-sale value.

Climate Change Killing Yellow Cedar Trees In Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) ? U.S. Forest Service researchers have confirmed what has long been suspected about a valuable tree in Alaska's Panhandle: Climate warming is killing off yellow cedar.

The mighty trees can live more than 1,000 years, resisting bugs and rot and even defending themselves against injury, but their shallow roots are vulnerable to freezing if soil is not insulated by snow. And for more than a century, with less snow on the ground, frozen roots have killed yellow cedar on nearly a half-million acres in southeast Alaska, plus another 123,000 acres in adjacent British Columbia.

The detective work on the tree deaths will help forest managers decide where yellow cedar is likely to thrive in the future. But the yellow cedar experience also underscores the increasing importance that climate change will play in managing forests, said Paul Schaberg, a USFS plant pathologist from Burlington, Vt., one of five authors of a paper on the tree that appeared this month in the journal Bioscience.

"As time goes on and climates change even more, other species, other locations, are likely to experience similar kinds of progressions, so you might do well to understand this one so you can address those future things," Schaberg said.

Yellow cedar and western red cedar are not the most common trees found in Alaska's coastal rainforest, but they were high-value commodities long before loggers arrived.

Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian people used the rot-resistant wood for canoe paddles and totem poles. They could remove a lengthwise strip of bark from a living tree to use for weaving baskets and hats, and as backing in blankets. The remarkable tree could compartmentalize the injury and continue growing.

Yellow cedar is still valued for boat-building, but the bulk of the Alaska commercial harvest is sold in Asian markets, said Paul Hennon, a USFS forest pathologist from Juneau and one of the lead authors of the research paper. In Japan, it's valued for its age, tight grain and light color, Hennon said.

The slow-growing yellow cedar has trouble competing with western hemlock or Sitka spruce on well-drained, nutrient-rich soils. However, it was found a niche in soils with poor or moderate drainage ? as long as its shallow, fine roots were covered by snow.

Those roots turned into an Achilles heel as snow patterns changed. Elevated mortality began around 1880-1890 and peaked in the 1970s and 1980s, according to the USFS study.

The yellow cedar's durability allowed dead trees to stand 100 years after they died but the cause of death was perplexing for years. Tree pathologists eliminated organisms or fungi as the primary cause and turned to physical factors such as hydrology and soil temperature, eventually linking yellow cedar decline to snow accumulation and duplicating results with seedlings.

"It's ironic that a species might be dying due to freeze-induced mortality when the climate signal is warming," Schaberg said. "So the world is getting warmer and these things are freezing? What's up with that?"

The conclusions have important implications for forest managers. They can predict where yellow cedar will thrive and the areas with poor drainage where yellow cedar has little chance to survive as snow patterns shift.

"That may seem counterintuitive to some folks, but one response is, you see a tree dying, you say, 'Oh, let's plant more,' without necessarily analyzing, well, why is it dying?" Schaberg said. "And if it really is a site that won't sustain the species, does it make any sense to put it there anymore?"

On the other hand, planting yellow cedar in areas that have good drainage, which would allow for deeper root growth, also would make sense. That would take some traditional forest management by eliminating competitors until yellow cedar had established itself.

"We can plant the tree on those sites, and also thin for it," Hennon said. "This is a place where active management can give yellow cedar a little bit of competitive edge, and then it does very well there."

Researchers also know that yellow cedar may thrive in areas where it has not yet migrated, leading to the possibility of "assisted migration."

"That gets some people pretty nervous, the idea of planting a species outside its range," Hennon said, because the tree could be considered an invasive species. The Forest Service conducted a trial planting near Yakutat, a coastal community northwest of Juneau, and saw a first-year survival rate of more than 90 percent. Since yellow cedar has already been found farther to the northwest in Prince William Sound, he doesn't consider the trial planting to be assisted migration.

In any case, climate change is likely to be more of a consideration for forest managers.

"I'm looking out my window and we have a dusting of snow at best," Schaberg said from his Vermont office. "And the soils are frozen all over the place, which is not the norm at all. So even just this one component of changing climate ? reduced snow packs, its influence on soils and the things that are living in soils, like roots ? that is not limited to the yellow cedar story and Alaska. That's pertinent to many locations."

Vancouver, B.C. (Wednesday, February 15, 2012) In 1997, a forest fire in Indonesia ignited an area of peatlands that smouldered for months. By the time it was over, the fire had released greenhouse gases equal to 20 to 40 percent of the total worldwide emissions that year from fossil fuels.

But that could be a drop in the bucket compared to future emissions from peat fires. Indonesian peatlands are dwarfed by Canada's. The total area of all peatland in Canada is estimated to be about twice the size of Saskatchewan.

At this week's meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Vancouver, Douglas Woolford of Wilfrid Laurier University will present findings that show how the fire season is becoming longer, and Mike Flannigan of the University of Alberta will highlight the increased risk of peat fires.

During a forest fire, especially in years of drought, peat can also ignite. When that happens, it produces a smoldering, smoky burn that is difficult to extinguish. Peat can grow several meters deep beneath the ground. In fact, some peat fires burn right through winter, beneath the snow, then pick up again in the spring.

A warming climate appears to be increasing the risk of peat fires in the North, according to Flannigan. For example, in 2007, Alaska's Anaktuvuk River region experienced a "tundra fire" fuelled by peat that covered 1,000 square kilometres. Until then, fire had largely been absent from the tundra since the Holocene epoch12,000 years ago.

Woolford's statistical analysis has shown that the forest fire season is becoming longer. Now, climate change models have been used to predict greater risk of forest fires in the future. On top of that, a warming climate means dryer weather, which makes peatlandsrich in legacy carbonmore likely to ignite and release greenhouse gas emissions. This would further contribute to global warming, creating a vicious circle of environmental harm.

Woolford and Flannigan will present their findings at the AAAS session Forest Fires in Canada: Impacts of Climate Change and Fire Smoke that will take place on Sunday, February 19, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., in Room 109 of the Vancouver Convention Centre West Building.

The session will be the subject of a special AAAS news briefing for media in Vancouver on Saturday, February 18 at 2:00 p.m. (PST).

Serious Facebook hack lands UK student in prison

(AP) ? A British student who stole sensitive information from Facebook's internal network was sentenced to eight months in prison Friday in what prosecutors described as the most serious case of social media hacking ever brought before the country's courts.

Prosecutor Sandip Patel said that Glenn Mangham, 26, had hacked into the social networking giant's computers from his bedroom in the northern England city of York and stole what was described as "invaluable" intellectual property.

"He acted with determination, undoubted ingenuity and it was sophisticated, it was calculating," Patel told London's Southwark Crown Court ahead of sentencing Friday. He added later: "This represents the most extensive and grave incident of social media hacking to be brought before the British courts."

London Chief Prosecutor Alison Saunders echoed Patel's description, saying in a statement that Mangham's actions were "extensive and flagrant." It was not immediately clear exactly what he stole, although Saunders said that no personal user data had been compromised.

Scotland Yard said in a statement that the breach had occurred "over a short period of time" in April of last year. The court was told that Mangham had obtained the information after hacking into the account of a Facebook employee while the staff member was on vacation.

The police statement said that Facebook Inc. discovered the breach in May and alerted the FBI, who traced the source of the attack back to Britain. Scotland Yard's e-crimes unit raided Mangham's home on June 2.

The software development student pleaded guilty on Dec. 13. His lawyer, Tony Ventham, described Mangham as an "ethical hacker" who saw the stunt as a challenge ? and stressed that his client had never tried to sell the stolen data or pass it on to anyone else.

"This is someone who in previous times would have thrown everything aside to seek the source of the Nile," Ventham said. "He was in his own world, his own bedroom, his own mind, his own project and certainly his intention throughout was to contact Facebook in due course when he had rectified their problems."

But while Judge Alistair McCreath accepted that Mangham had not tried to profit from his crime, he said that the defendant's actions still had "very serious potential consequences" which could have been "utterly disastrous" for Facebook.

"This was not just a bit of harmless experimentation," McCreath told Mangham. "You accessed the very heart of the system of an international business of massive size, so this was not just fiddling about in the business records of some tiny business of no great importance."

The Palo Alto, California-based Facebook said in a statement that it applauded police and prosecutors' efforts in the case, adding: "We take any attempt to gain unauthorized access to our network very seriously."

The company, which boasts some 845 million users worldwide, recently filed papers for its initial public offering at the beginning of this month, putting it on track to price its stock in May or June.

Facebook is expected to be valued at $75 billion to $100 billion.
