Financial markets are closed for two days as Hurricane Sandy bears down upon Lower Manhattan, the heart of the Financial District and the location of Wall Street.
The New York Stock Exchange was closed Monday and continued to stay closed Tuesday as flood waters pummeled the East Coast.
The last time the U.S. stock markets were closed due to weather for two consecutive days was in 1888. In other words, this is a once-in-a-century event.
The cause for the stock market closure in 1888 was a blizzard that left 40-foot snowdrifts in New York.
