Health: New Way To Freeze Away Cancer ? CBS Philly

By Stephanie Stahl

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? A new way to freeze away cancer and a first in Philadelphia. 3 On Your Side Health Reporter Stephanie Stahl is here with exclusive details on the minimally invasive treatment.

This is a new patient friendly way to treat cancer of the esophagus, that?s the tube like structure that runs from the throat to the stomach.
Sonny and Clara Galati have been married 42 years. They have a life filled with laughter, family and exotic travel.

When he was diagnosed with early stage cancer of the esophagus two months ago, they were devastated.

?It was like everything stopped, and I wondered what would we do without him,? said Clara.

Sonny became one of the first patients in Philadelphia to get a new treatment at Temple University Hospital.

?There?s no cutting or surgery involved. There?s no chemotherapy or radiation that?s involved,? said Dr. Michael Smith, who is using a new form of Cryotherapy. It?s called truFreeze, used to zap cancer cells in the esophagus.

?This is a brand new device that maximizes the efficiency of the spraying to allow us to treat more effectively and in a more patient friendly way with less risks of side effects,? said Dr. Smith, who is a paid consultant for truFreeze. He says the patient is asleep during the outpatient procedure.

The freezing spray comes from a catheter guided down the throat with a camera mounted endoscope. Inside the esophagus the frozen, dead cancer cells turn white.

?This is very much a minimally invasive, patient friendly way to kill these cells,? said Dr. Smith.

?There?s no post pain or anything I felt from the procedure. It was very easy to go through,? said Sonny.

And now from fearing the worst, the Galati?s are back to planning more adventures together.

?I?m at the right place at the right time. I?m blessed I could do this, that this is possible,? said Sonny.

Depending on the cancer, patients usually get a series of cryotherapy treatments.

It?s also used for a condition called Barrett?s esophagus, that?s caused by acid reflux and increases the cancer risk.

Syrian internet goes down, gets cut off from the world

Syrian internet goes down, gets cut off from the world

The civil war-torn nation of Syria has seemingly disappeared from the internet. In a sign that the regime of President Bashar al-Assad is trying to limit the flow of information and possibly increase its violent crackdown on opposition forces, all 84 blocks of IP addresses used by the nation have gone offline. The blackout was first reported by Renesys this morning at around 5:26am ET and the #SyriaBlackout hashtag has started picking up steam on Twitter as others have noticed. While it's unclear exactly what has happened and investigations are on going, and a nationwide outage is highly suspicious. The Associated Press is reporting that rebels are laying blame for the blackout at the feet of the government and that cellphone service has also been severed. We'll update as more information rolls in, but we wouldn't expect good news.

Update: Akamai has provided more confirmation of the outage. As you can see in the image above, at some point this morning the amount of data coming out of Syria simply dropped to zero.

Tell President Obama: Reject the Keystone XL Pipeline

Now that President Obama has been re-elected, he's got a choice to make.

But, in the wake of the devastation caused by climate-change-fueled Superstorm Sandy, it shouldn't be much of a choice at all.

He must reject the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline.

President Obama will likely decide early next year. As he looks to his priorities in his second term, and to the legacy of his presidency, we need to send an immediate, unambiguous message right now.

Tell President Obama: Reject the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline.

President Obama did his best to remain silent on climate change throughout the campaign - and instead extolled the virtues of expanded drilling, expanded fracking, mythical pollution-free coal, and his administration's approval of the southern portion of Keystone XL.

But Sandy forced his hand, and even the president had to acknowledge in his acceptance speech our desire to live in an America that "isn't threatened by the destructive power of a warming planet."

That should be grounds for immediately rejecting Keystone XL, but at a White House press conference Wednesday, President Obama showed that he was still vulnerable to the misleading economy vs. environment arguments put forward by polluters, saying that climate policies should take a back seat to "jobs and growth."1 This is a false choice, ignoring the realities of an economy that favors dirty fossil fuels at Americans' expense -- monumental costs that includes sickness from pollution and damage from climate-change fueled disasters like Sandy.

The choice is now with President Obama. He can approve a pipeline that will "XL" climate change and extreme weather like Sandy by doubling production of the dirtiest and most destructive oil on earth - or he can reject that pipeline, and actually commit America to sources of energy that do not worsen our already too-volatile climate.

It simply is not possible to have it both ways. Tell President Obama: Reject the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline.

On November 18, thousands of people will be gathering at the White House to deliver this message to President Obama2 and let him know that the movement that delayed Keystone XL last year is still here; that we still hold him to the promises he made in 2008; that tackling climate change must be a top priority of his administration.

As Superstorm Sandy - along with the recent record droughts, wildfires, storms and floods - have made all too clear, our action against climate change must be rapid and ambitious.

What it can not include, is a pipeline that will help unleash the more than 240 gigatons of carbon stored in the carbon bomb of the tar sands, when most scientists agree we can release no more than 565 more gigatons if we are to maintain a livable planet.3

Failing to fight climate change by approving the Keystone XL pipeline is not just an irresponsible act. Enriching a foreign oil company, when doing so will do clear damage to the residents of our nation, is a clear failure of leadership.

It is time for President Obama to draw a line in the tar sands, and reject the Keystone XL pipeline.

Source: Obama officials, lawmakers set for talks

WASHINGTON (AP) ? An administration official says two of President Barack Obama's top negotiators on the "fiscal cliff" will meet separately on Thursday with leading lawmakers.

The sessions are seen as an important step in determining how the government will avoid a year-end package of tax increases and spending cuts that could throw the economy into recession.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner (GYT'-nur) and White House legislative chief Rob Nabors will meet on Thursday with House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the meetings had not yet been publicly announced.

The meetings will take place on Capitol Hill.

(AP) ? After her father and stepmother were arrested last year for chaining her to a dresser, young Jersey Bridgeman received something of a fresh start when she began kindergarten this fall in northwestern Arkansas.

Then, last week, the 6-year-old's body was found in a vacant home two doors from where she had been living with her mother.

"The fact that she went through what she went through when she was 5. ... And then this happens," Chelsea Jouett said Tuesday after dropping a teddy bear off at Jersey's home. "She had such a rough life."

Police have arrested neighbor and family friend Zachary Holly, 28, in Jersey's death. Holly is due in court Wednesday in Bentonville, a city about 215 miles northwest of Little Rock that is best known as the home of Wal-Mart's headquarters.

Holly was being held on capital murder, kidnapping and residential burglary charges Tuesday night at the Benton County Jail. A judge is likely to appoint a lawyer to represent him during his court appearance Wednesday.

Holly's arrest Monday came about a week after Jersey was found dead in an empty house next to the mobile home where Holly lived. Police said a search turned up the girl's body just minutes after someone reported her missing Nov. 20.

So far, Bentonville police have not said how Jersey died or released any possible motives. Chief Jon Simpson said many questions about the investigation will be answered when a probable cause affidavit comes out Wednesday.

Simpson said Holly worked at a restaurant in town called The Flying Burrito Company. The manager, Tabitha Stevens, confirmed that Holly worked there but declined to comment further.

One neighbor, Julie Pickard, said Tuesday that Holly wept the day Jersey's body was found.

"He was crying for a long time," said Pickard, who lives on the other side of the home where Jersey's body was found.

Later that day, Pickard said, police knocked on her door and told her to let them know if she saw a man wearing Mountain Dew pajama pants.

"(Holly) was wearing Mountain Dew pajama pants," Pickard said.

No one answered the door Tuesday at the mobile home where police say Holly lived with his wife. A child's bicycle rested on a patch of grass near the home.

Simpson, the police chief, told The Associated Press the couple didn't have any children but that Holly's wife has a child who is "pretty much the same age as our victim." Simpson described Holly as "an acquaintance" and a friend of Jersey's family.

Next door, a child's bike with training wheels lay in front of the house where police said Jersey lived with her mother, DesaRae Bridgeman. Nearby was a deflated balloon decorated with the kinds of princesses that fill little girls' dreams.

Less than a mile away, Jersey's family on Tuesday buried the little girl who lived through more than her share of hardship. Police said the family requests privacy as they grieve.

Jersey's death comes after her father and stepmother chained the girl to a dresser last year. David Bridgeman told investigators he restrained his daughter to keep her from getting into medication and other things around the house in nearby Rogers.

David Bridgeman and Jersey's stepmother, Jana Bridgeman, pleaded guilty in June to false imprisonment, permitting abuse of a minor and endangering the welfare of a minor. She is serving a 12-year prison sentence, plus three years for a probation revocation. He is serving an 18-year prison sentence.

Meanwhile, those who knew Jersey are remembering the little girl who was still joyful despite what was, by all indications, a difficult life.

"I don't know how she dealt with it, but she dealt with it and she still smiled the whole time," family friend Mike Whitcomb said.

Brief exercise immediately enhances memory: Results apply to older adults both with and without cognitive deficits

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? A short burst of moderate exercise enhances the consolidation of memories in both healthy older adults and those with mild cognitive impairment, scientists with UC Irvine's Center for the Neurobiology of Learning & Memory have discovered.

Most research has focused on the benefits of a long-term exercise program on overall health and cognitive function with age. But the UCI work is the first to examine the immediate effects of a brief bout of exercise on memory.

In their study, post-doctoral researcher Sabrina Segal and neurobiologists Carl Cotman and Lawrence Cahill had people 50 to 85 years old with and without memory deficits view pleasant images -- such as photos of nature and animals -- and then exercise on a stationary bicycle for six minutes at 70 percent of their maximum capacity immediately afterward.

One hour later, the participants were given a surprise recall test on the previously viewed images. Results showed a striking enhancement of memory by exercise in both the healthy and cognitively impaired adults, compared with subjects who did not ride the bike.

"We found that a single, short instance of moderately intense exercise particularly improved memory in individuals with memory deficits," Segal said. "Because of its implications and the need to better understand the mechanism by which exercise may enhance memory, we're following up this study with an investigation of potential underlying biological factors."

She believes the improved memory may be related to the exercise-induced release of norepinephrine, a chemical messenger in the brain known to play a strong role in memory modulation. This hypothesis is based on previous work demonstrating that increasing norepinephrine through pharmacological manipulation sharpens memory and that blocking norepinephrine impairs memory.

In the more recent research, Segal and her colleagues discovered that levels of salivary alpha amylase, a biomarker that reflects norepinephrine activity in the brain, significantly increased in participants after exercise. This correlation was especially strong in people with memory impairment.

"The current findings offer a natural and relatively safe alternative to pharmacological interventions for memory enhancement in healthy older individuals as well as those who suffer from cognitive deficits," Segal noted. "With a growing population of the aged, the need for improvement of quality of life and prevention of mental decline is more important than ever before."

Study results appear in the November issue (Volume 32, Number 4) of the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. UCI's Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and the National Institute of Mental Health (grant number 575082), a division of the National Institutes of Health, supported the research.

Coffee vending services are popular with office workers and visitors. They insert a few coins, and press a button to make their selection and receive their hot drink almost instantly. These types of machines have come a long way from the first model, designed to dispense holy water, by an individual who worked as an engineer and mathematician hundreds of years ago.

Historically, in many workplaces, employees brought in their refreshment supplies and made their own hot drinks or used a flask. That caused employers concerns, because individuals also brought in their second-hand kettles, which usually did not meet with the current safety standards. The alternative was for the company to provide kettles or hot-water urns.

Refreshment breaks in the workplace have always been a source of conflict between employees and management. Employees were often accused of taking extended breaks, or too many breaks. They responded with complaints about the distance they had to go to get a hot drink, or the queue they had to stand in when they got there.

Introducing vending machines in rest areas has proved popular with employees and eliminated the need for kettles in the work area. If the rest and vending area is incorporated into the office area, staff are less likely to take frequent or extended breaks. They can get their hot drink from the office coffee service and return to their desk if that is allowed.

Many large and modern office complexes are designed so their floor plan includes an area for refreshments and vending services. The preferred method for providing office vending services would be on a contract basis. The service supplier maintains, cleans and replenishes stocks and retains ownership of the machines. In many cases, the cost of the machine rental for the employer is minimal.

Many employees take advantage of food and drink machines to save time. They do not want to waste time going outside the office for food and drinks, especially in the bad weather. They can usually take their pick and enjoy a wide variety of hot and cold drinks and food.

Reputable firms that provide kitchen supplies Pittsburgh area and elsewhere around the US, survey their customers and monitor buying habits to determine the types of products that are popular. They also take into account the information supplied by health providers and nutritionists on what makes a healthy snack or dinner. They aim to provide food and coffee vending services to meet customer demands.

Does human transformation of land threaten future sustainability?

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Social and physical scientists have long been concerned about the effects of humans on Earth's surface -- in part through deforestation, encroachment of urban areas onto traditionally agricultural lands, and erosion of soils -- and the implications these changes have on Earth's ability to provide for an ever-growing population. The December 2012 GSA Today science article presents examples of land transformation by humans and documents some of the effects of these changes.

Researchers Roger Hooke of the University of Maine, USA, and Jos? F. Mart?n-Duque and Javier Pedraza of Complutense University, Spain, examine factors such as available agricultural land area and discuss some of the implications of their findings in light of human population growth and its relationship to planetary resources.

Overall, they find that just over 50% of Earth's total land surface has been modified by human activity. Because many of these modifications also result in reduction of land available for agriculture -- either by degradation of land quality by processes such as soil erosion, or by transforming agriculture lands to urban uses -- Hooke and colleagues argue that these changes to our planet's land surface also influence the ability of these same lands to sustain local, regional, and, ultimately, global population.

Comparing projections of future changes in land-use with projections of population growth leads them to also suggest that human population may be entering, or already in, a state of "overshoot" -- where the needs of the present population exceed the long-term carrying capacity of a region. Solutions may not be easy to arrive at, but would need to involve a combination of efforts aimed to reduce demand for resources, develop new technical solutions to resource limitations, and to reduce the rate of growth of population.

Nintendo Wii U North American sales top 400K in first week

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime says Wii U sales crested 400K units in its first week, according to internal sales data. That's just part of a 1.2 million hardware sales week that Nintendo's enjoyed across the past seven days -- which include the crucial Black Friday -- where the Wii saw 300K units sold, and portables dominated. Nintendo's 3DS sold 250K, while the aged DS moved 275K -- not too shabby for an eight-plus-year-old console! CNET snagged the data from Fils-Aime in a post-Wii U launch phone interview, where he characterized 3DS sales as continuing on a "record-setting pace" (now at more than 6 million units sold-in to North American retailers).

As for the seemingly paltry launch sales of the Wii U console -- 200K units shy of the original Wii's launch week -- Fils-Aime says it's a question of his company's ability to keep it in stores and not of lacking demand. "Retailers are also doing their best to get the product to store shelves. But as soon as product hits retail, they're selling out immediately," Fils-Aime explains. Without giving any concrete promises or timetables, he adds, "We are looking to have as much product into retail as possible."
