Multi-million dollar Las Vegas police radio system not working well ...

LAS VEGAS NV Oct 31 2012-- Sheriff Doug Gillespie doesn't like the multimillion-dollar radio system the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has been using and would welcome a replacement.

But the big problem will be finding the money. After two years of trying to work out kinks with dead zones, Gillespie wants to drop the Desert Sky Radio System. ?Public safety and officer safety is not compromised at this point,? said Assistant Sheriff Joseph Lombardo. ?We have concerns about officer safety being compromised. We do not want to be put in that situation.? The $42 million system, built by Harris Corporation provides voice and data. Metro says its problem is the voice side of the system: dropped calls, making it hard to communicate with officers in the field. Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak, who serves on the fiscal affairs committee for Metro's budget, says the timing is terrible, financially speaking but he's mostly concerned about the men and women of metro who are out there to protect us. ?What clearly was promised was not delivered,? Sisolak said. Gillespie ?has to do everything immediately necessary, and I have total confidence that he will to protect the men and women in the field at Metro and then we have to solve the budgetary situation.? That situation, as Sisolak calls it, is a $46 million deficit that leaves no room for new radios. Metro says it's looking at another radio communications system either through Harris or Motorola while still trying to get the current system to work. Harris officials released this statement: "We will continue to work with the Las Vegas Metro Police Department to support their specific use of the desert sky system for mission-critical voice and data communications.
