Family, Parenting, Reviews, and Giveaways - The Attic Girl: Happy ...

Recently my family enjoyed Happy Hauntings at Dutch Wonderland in Lancaster, PA (thanks to US Family Guide).? Dutch Wonderland, a kids' amusement park, turns into a fun spook fest select weekends in October.

We had planned to visit during the summer, but a few things interfered with that, including my gall bladder surgery.? However, we finally were able to carve out some time to go together as a family (which can be tricky since we only have my son every other weekend and we wanted to include him).? It was about a 2 hour drive from my area south of Baltimore.?

I don't know about other moms, but I try to arrive as early as possible when it comes to events that have large crowds.? Due to some traffic, we didn't get there as early as I wanted.? We arrived a little after the park opened at 3:15 and the parking lot was already nearly half full.? My advice:? if you want a shorter walk with a little one, get there early.? Parking is free, so the earlier the better to get a choice parking spot.

Having never been to Dutch Wonderland, I scoped out all the attractions online.? My first objective was to visit the Trick-or-Treat Trail, since I figured that would be a popular spot.

The trail is clearly roped off and has festive stations with costumed helpers that aren't too scary (I think it was a good thing it wasn't dark yet so it was less of a scary factor for little miss).? This was The Attic Baby's first time trick-or-treating, so she wasn't quite sure of how it worked.? She enjoyed walking by herself and trying to say "trick or treat."?? Kids aren't the only ones who get a treat.? Mom and Dad will get a ticket to exchange for a candy too.? If your child has any allergies though, you may want to have an alternative for them (particularly peanut allergies).? We received different kinds of mini chocolate bars, Kit-Kat, and Reece's Peanut Butter cups.

There are many great fall photo opps along the park trails with hay bales, and pumpkins.? And you'll find some-what spooky features along the train ride and monorail.

The monorail had a bit of a line when we arrived, but it went pretty quickly.? We only had to wait a few minutes between trains for the 7 minute ride.? It's a great way to check out all the rides in the park and plot out your ride "strategy."??

Our next priority was a character visit with Duke.? We arrived at the Amphitheater about 20 minutes ahead of the Royal Friends Meet and Greet scheduled time.? Unfortunately, we were informed that Duke had some costume issues, so we had to go back later.?
?
My hubby and the kids had pizza for dinner.? Then we spent quite a bit of time trying to find a place that had something I could eat on my low-fat diet. While there are many places to eat like the Millstream Eatery,? I wasn't able to find a place that wasn't really crowded (there was a long line for the restaurant) and had a lot of low-fat options.? So I just munched on a few snacks.

We went back to the Amphitheater for the next Meet and Greet and were able to see Duke and the Princess.? The Attic baby loved Duke; she kept waving at him and gave him a big kiss when it was her turn on the stage.?

My son enjoyed the slide and the sky ride but chose not to go on the roller coaster after eating (probably a wise decision).???

Once it got dark, the lines started getting longer and The Attic Baby was getting tired.? So we decided to stop by the restrooms before starting the 2 hour drive home.? The restrooms were very clean, had designated stalls for little ones, and hands-free soap dispensers, water faucets and paper towels.

Overall, we really enjoyed our first visit to Dutch Wonderland.? Happy Hauntings was a lot of fun and a great day trip, but I think we will visit again during the regular season.??

The late park hours (they didn't open until 3pm) were a little rough on a young toddler.? And the park at night isn't well lit for navigating with a stroller, especially the parking lot.? If you have to park way out in the other end of the lot away from the castle, it's a dark walk back to your car.? I'd suggest taking glow sticks or a flashlight (we used our cell phone).

Disclosure:? As a US Family Guide blogger, I received complimentary tickets for my family.? No other compensation was received and all opinions are my own.? For more info. see my disclosure policy

Multi-million dollar Las Vegas police radio system not working well ...

LAS VEGAS NV Oct 31 2012-- Sheriff Doug Gillespie doesn't like the multimillion-dollar radio system the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has been using and would welcome a replacement.

But the big problem will be finding the money. After two years of trying to work out kinks with dead zones, Gillespie wants to drop the Desert Sky Radio System. ?Public safety and officer safety is not compromised at this point,? said Assistant Sheriff Joseph Lombardo. ?We have concerns about officer safety being compromised. We do not want to be put in that situation.? The $42 million system, built by Harris Corporation provides voice and data. Metro says its problem is the voice side of the system: dropped calls, making it hard to communicate with officers in the field. Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak, who serves on the fiscal affairs committee for Metro's budget, says the timing is terrible, financially speaking but he's mostly concerned about the men and women of metro who are out there to protect us. ?What clearly was promised was not delivered,? Sisolak said. Gillespie ?has to do everything immediately necessary, and I have total confidence that he will to protect the men and women in the field at Metro and then we have to solve the budgetary situation.? That situation, as Sisolak calls it, is a $46 million deficit that leaves no room for new radios. Metro says it's looking at another radio communications system either through Harris or Motorola while still trying to get the current system to work. Harris officials released this statement: "We will continue to work with the Las Vegas Metro Police Department to support their specific use of the desert sky system for mission-critical voice and data communications.

?We recognize that each of our customers has unique requirements for their communications environment, and we remain fully committed to optimizing their experience and responding to their preferences for system operation.?

Antivirus for My Phone? - Tech Support Service : Computer Tech ...

In the last few decades, cellphone technology has grown by leaps and bounds. Where once it was necessary to carry around a big, bulky device which could only make voice calls, now smartphones are small and sleek and can perform virtually any function that a desktop or laptop computer can. In fact due to the increasing level of power that the average smartphone has at its command, many people are using smartphones in place of both laptops and desktops.

With this explosion in technological capability, and the subsequent widespread use it has caused, comes the inevitable development of harmful and malicious software that sets different smartphone operating systems in their sights. While the two most popular operating systems that are used on smartphones, Apple?s iOS and Google?s Android, are generally considered much more secure than Windows, this does not mean that they are immune from all attacks. Not to mention the fact that the more time that is given to hackers and phishers, the more opportunity they have to discover ever more sophisticated methods of exploiting smartphone users.

As a result, it is important to understand what types of threats have already been identified, as well as different methods you can use to protect yourself. As with most things in life, more information means a greater chance of protecting yourself successfully.

The Threats

As was mentioned above, the operating systems that are most widely used on smartphones are much more secure than the most popular desktop and laptop operating system: Windows. Apple?s iOS is a modified version of OS X, the operating system that is run on most Macs. Historically, the OS family of operating systems has had a much greater degree of success in keeping users safer than their? Microsoft?s Windows? counterparts.

The other popular operating system that is used on smartphones, Google?s Android, is a variant of the Linux operating system. Linux has also been widely recognized as being much more secure than Windows, with the number of viruses and pieces of malware designed to exploit it coming in at a fraction of those that have been discovered on Windows based PCs.

Combine this inherently higher degree of security with the fact that smartphones are still a relatively new phenomenon in comparison to desktops and laptops and the number of recognized threats to smartphones is much smaller.

However, there is one area that provides criminals with a gateway to possible exploitation that you would not see on computers and laptops, and that would be apps. In essence, apps are to smartphones what normal normal pieces of software generally are to desktops and laptops. One of the primary differences is that many apps are developed and coded by private individuals and many times are free to download and use. As a result, there is a much higher chance that a hacker can write an app that performs malicious functions and it will actually see widespread use.

A perfect example of this type of app is one that was written claiming to allow users to access their bank accounts directly from their smartphones. However, when customers called their banks for assistance in setting up the app, their bank had no knowledge of this capability. As it turns out, the app did not provide the stated features, rather its only function was to capture the username and password of bank customers. As you can imagine, this type of information in the wrong hands can lead to catastrophe.

Another example of malware that has been tied specifically to smartphone users is Trojans that cause smartphones to dial different premium phone numbers that can cost money for each minute of connection. Typically the numbers called are pornographic chat lines with price tags of around $5 per minute! As you can see, a call like this could end up costing a pretty penny on the victim?s next phone bill.

Aside from these examples there are also the classics that can affect pretty much any internet user. Email attachments are notorious for containing Trojans and other virus programs. Clicking on unverified links can also allow criminals to slip invisible malware programs designed to wreak havoc and steal data.

How Can I Make Myself Safe?

When it comes to ensuring safety for your private data when it comes to smartphone usage, one of the most important things to remember is to never download and install an app that is made by an unknown source. Just because you find the app on a well known app development site does not necessarily mean that it has been tested and vetted by the site?s owners. Look for reviews by other people that have used the app before. As a rule, try to never be the first person to use a brand new app.

Another wise choice would be to download and install security software designed specifically to protect smartphones. A classic example of this type of software is produced by Good Technologies and can be found at www1.good.com. Software of this type can not only provide protection from malware and apps that seek to steal your data or call costly premium phone numbers, but can also locate your phone through its GPS if it is lost or stolen.

Above all, use common sense and good judgment. The same lessons you have learned for using the internet on your desktop or laptop will usually apply to using it on your smartphone. If you do not know the sender of an email, don?t open the attachment. Also, be wary of clicking on links if you are not 100 percent sure that the destination is a safe one.

As time marches on, more and more exploits are bound to be made specifically targeting smartphones and their operating systems. As a result, it is important to keep abreast of these developments and any protection that becomes available to combat them.

Lomography Fisheye Baby 110 Basic

By Jim Fisher

The Lomography Fisheye Baby 110 Basic ($39.99 direct) is a tiny film camera that produces a circular fisheye image on 110 film. Its images are extremely soft and dreamy, which could be a pro or con depending on your aesthetic sensibilities. The camera is fun, but using it isn't a perfect experience?if the film cartridge doesn't have a frame counter built-in there's no way to tell how many exposures you've made on the roll until you finish it, and you may have a hard time finding a lab that can process and scan 110 film.?

Lomography Fisheye Baby 110 Basic : Sample ImageLiving up to its baby moniker, the camera measures only 2.8 by 2.7 by 2 inches (HWD) without film. To load a roll you have to remove the back of the camera?the film cartridge clips directly on to the Fisheye Baby. It's a neat design, and adds just a bit of size to the package as the enclosed spools of the film cartridge hang out of either side.

The lens is plastic with a fixed f/8 aperture and the shutter can only fire at 1/100-second or in bulb mode, which keeps it open as long as you depress the button. It's not sharp by any means?wider views have a soft, dreamy look. Shooting very close to your subject helps to better capture detail, but it's still not as sharp as a camera with a modern glass lens. I used black and white film and found that the best shots were of very high contrast scenes.

Lomography Fisheye Baby 110 Basic : Sample ImageBecause of the fixed aperture and shutter speed, your choice of film will determine what kind of light in which you can shoot. The Lomo Orca black and white stock is an ISO 100 speed stock, while the Tiger is a 200 speed color negative. Both types of film give you some exposure latitude, but as you can't add a flash to the camera, it's best used in daylight or brighter light.

If you're still considering shooting with film, you're already in the right mindset to give the inexpensive Lomography Fisheye Baby 110 a try. It's impressively tiny, and the circular fisheye lens can be a lot of fun. Its images are very soft and dreamy, so look elsewhere if you crave clinical sharpness. I've had more fun with other Lomo cameras?the La Sardina and Sprocket Rocket ?in particular, but I've also never been a fan of the fisheye look, so your mileage may vary. Depending on where you live, getting 110 film processed might be a chore, and the lack of fast film limits the camera to outdoor use.

Water-based exercise bicycle provides workouts as good as land-based stationary bicycle

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Biking, running and walking are all good for you. But the strain can be tough if you're overweight, have arthritis or suffer from other joint problems or injuries. What to do? Just add water.

A study presented today at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress found that people who used an immersible ergocycle -- basically an exercise bike in a pool -- had just about the equivalent workout to using a typical stationary bike.

"If you can't train on land, you can train in the water and have the same benefits in terms of improving aerobic fitness," says Dr. Martin Juneau, director of prevention at the Montreal Heart Institute.

He says people might assume that exercising in the water can't be as valuable as exercising on land. Because of the resistance of the water when you move, it doesn't seem like you can work as hard. This new study indicates otherwise.

Healthy participants did exercise tests on both the land and water cycling machines (with water up to chest level). They increased their intensity minute by minute until exhaustion.

Dr. Juneau reports that the maximal oxygen consumption -- which tells you whether it was a good workout -- was almost the same using both types of cycles.

His study colleague Dr. Mathieu Gayda, a clinical exercise physiologist at the Montreal Heart Institute, adds: "Exercise during water immersion may be even more efficient from a cardiorespiratory standpoint."

Another finding, says Dr. Juneau, is that the heart rate of the participants was a little lower in the water.

"You pump more blood for each beat, so don't need as many heartbeats, because the pressure of the water on your legs and lower body makes the blood return more effectively to the heart. That's interesting data that hasn't been studied thoroughly before," says Dr. Juneau.

Considering the number of people who can find it difficult to exercise on land, the water option is promising, says Dr. Juneau. He says that swimming may be the best exercise of all but not everyone can swim. With the workout benefits, the low stress of moving in the water and the reduced chance of injury, "this is a great alternative," he says.

Heart and Stroke Foundation spokesperson Dr. Beth Abramson notes that 85 per cent of Canadians do not accumulate the recommended 150 minutes per week of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity.

"Inactive people who become physically active can reduce their risk of heart attack risk by 35 to 55 per cent, plus lower their chance of developing several other conditions, cut stress levels and increase energy," says Dr. Abramson. "Even if you have difficulty moving more, there are always solutions, as this study shows. This is encouraging given the aging population -- it's never too late or too difficult to make a lifestyle change."

Tips for the Best Auto Insurance | Car and Auto Blog

When it comes to taking an insurance cover for your vehicle, motorists always want maximum cover in case of an incident but do not want to be charged more than necessary. Unfortunately, most of them end up paying even more for policies that they could buy elsewhere at reduced premiums. This is because they do not want to spare some time to research about various options that they have. Before applying for auto insurance in New Orleans, some of the following tips may be handy.

A very important tip is always to shop and compare. When it comes to auto insurance, sometimes it pays to be choosy. It is not uncommon to find different insurers charging completely different rates for similar policies. By comparing, you will be able to choose a policy that is affordable and also give you adequate cover.

It also pays to check your driving records. Nothing drives up car premium rates like a bad driving record. Because of this, you can enhance your driving license by enrolling in safe driving courses. These will ensure that you are more careful on the road and less prone to accidents thus reduced premium rates.

You should also be on the lookout for any discounts that are offered by your insurer. This may even involve asking your insurer what you qualify for. Most of the times, you will find insurers offering discounts to those clients who have not made any claims in the recent past or those who pay their premiums in a lump sum.

You should also try to improve your credit score just before applying for auto insurance. Depending on your state, if you properly handle your rating, your insurer may just reward you with reduced premiums. It therefore goes without saying that a poor credit score is likely to cost you more in terms of premiums for your car policy. Some methods you can use to improve your rating include; disputing any errors on it, paying your debts on time, maintaining credit card balances low and so forth.

It is also important to provide accurate and complete information to your insurer. Some motorists usually hide some information so that they can be charged lower premiums. By doing so, you are not likely to be fully compensated in case of an incident. It is therefore very important to provide accurate information about the vehicle you are buying the policy for.

You must also gather the track records of your insurer of choice. After gathering all the other important information concerning the best policy, you should also look for the reputations of the insurer. Talk to some of their previous or even current clients. Ask them whether the company would be prompt in compensation when you make claims.

It is also important to note that this type of policy is usually a legal contract. When you buy auto insurance in New Orleans, you will be issued with a policy. It is equally important to go through that policy so that you become familiar with its contents. Should only sign the contract if you are comfortable with the terms and conditions under which bit is issued.

(AP) ? Now that she has finished the hajj and is returning home to Egypt, Magda Bagnied says her family will no doubt try to convince her to put on the headscarf to demonstrate her religiosity after a pilgrimage meant to cleanse her of sin and bring her closer to God.

She fully expects that from her parents. But she doesn't want that kind of pressure from her government or leaders.

"Leave religion to the people," said Bagnied, a media professor at Ahram Canadian University, in Cairo's suburbs.

The annual pilgrimage to Islam's holiest sites offers Muslims a chance to reaffirm their faith and root themselves more firmly in their beliefs. It comes at a time when several Arab nations are facing a similar issue on a political level after uprisings that toppled longtime leaders and brought Islamists to greater power: The question of how much a government should be rooted in Islam.

Egypt in particular is struggling with that question. Elections since the fall last year of Hosni Mubarak elevated Mohammed Morsi, who hails from the Muslim Brotherhood, to president. The Brotherhood was vaulted to become the country's strongest political force, along with even more conservative Islamists known as Salafis, who follow a strict Saudi-style interpretation of Islam.

As pilgrims were making their way around the Kaaba, the cube-shaped structure in Mecca that observant Muslims pray toward five times a day, and performing an elaborate set of rituals in Saudi Arabia over the past week, Egypt was in a bitter struggle over the writing of the new constitution.

Salafis are pressing for the document to explicitly root Egypt's laws in Shariah. That has raised liberals' fears that it will bring stricter implementation of Islamic law and empower Muslim clerics in a political role, limiting women's rights and freedoms of worship and expression. The assembly writing the constitution is dominated by the Brotherhood and Salafis.

The Egyptians who performed the pilgrimage this year may be united in the importance they give to their faith in their lives. But it doesn't mean they all agree on the mix of religion and politics. More than 90,000 Egyptians were on the pilgrimage, which largely wrapped up on Monday. They hailed from all segments of Egyptian society, the rich and the poor, and from all corners of the Arab world's most populous nation.

Wearing the seamless terrycloth garments worn by male pilgrims to symbolize equality and unity during hajj, Sayid Zeid said Egypt's constitution should represent all Egyptians ? and, he added, it must be based on the Quran.

How can it be both, given the large Christian minority and the sector of liberal Muslims?

"Shariah will be applied by God ... It should be applied as it came down from God," said Zeid, who is a reporter with Egypt's state TV, though he was performing the hajj, not covering it.

For some, it seemed only natural that Islamic law would benefit a Muslim-majority nation, putting aside questions of who would interpret it or implement it.

Making his way to midday prayers at Mecca's Grand Mosque, which houses the Kaaba, Abdel-Muntalib el-Fikky said there is no reason to fear Shariah or the Islamists.

"Why are we all here? We are all here for God," he said of the pilgrims. "Our constitution, God willing, will be good. It will move us forward."

Anwar Saad, a 32 year-old teacher from Egypt's Beheira province, stood on Jabal al-Rahma in Mount Arafat, in the desert outside Mecca during a rite of prayer on Thursday that many feel is the pinnacle moment of hajj.

"The Brotherhood have moderate views. They are not conservative like the Salafis. We hope they will apply a moderate form of Shariah for Egypt," he said. "We want God to help Morsi succeed ... There were 30 years of corruption and this will not be fixed in 100 days. Be patient with the president."

Notably, hajj itself shows the variety in interpretations of Islamic rules. For example, in most of the Muslim world, men and women are segregated during prayers. But in the Grand Mosque, the two sexes pray side by side. For most of the hajj rites, women are not allowed to wear the veil that covers the entire face, even though ultraconservative Muslims insist a woman's face should be hidden from males not related to her.

Bagnied, the media professor, said she does not fear Shariah but those who would try to interpret and apply it.

"What kind of Islam do they want to apply? Afghanistan, Iran or Saudi Arabia?" she said. Bagnied, who does not wear the headscarf that many Egyptian Muslim women don to cover their hair, said she can resist her family's urging her to start wearing it. But she worries that an Islamist government will start to apply political pressure as well on such personal choices.

She said many people voted for Morsi hoping that because he is a pious Muslim and will apply "God's law" that their lives will improve.

"I think many Egyptians don't know the content of the constitution," she said. "Egypt is full of people talking about politics, but there is a large amount of ignorance in the country and you can convince people (by using Islam) that they have to obey their leaders, who are sheiks and politicians."

Ihab Abdel-Aal, 47, is among those who voted for the former Mubarak regime-era official who ran against Morsi in the past summer's presidential race. Morsi won by just over half the vote. Abdel-Aal has performed the hajj more than 25 times, since he's a tour operator bringing other Egyptians on the pilgrimage.

He fears Egypt is turning to a theocracy.

"Democracy and freedom are new to Egypt," he said. "There should be no religion in politics and no politics in religion."

Abdel-Aal, like many who work in Egypt's vital tourism industry that was hard-hit due to political turmoil over the past year, said he believes Shariah cannot be applied in all aspects of life.

"This will tank the economy and other sectors and just won't work."

Mohamed Abdel-Aziz, who runs a Cairo tourism company, says he has performed hajj more than 30 times. He said the number of Egyptians wanting to perform hajj and umrah, the smaller pilgrimage to Mecca, increased this year.

"In any crisis, the first thing a person does is pray to God," he said. "We are in a crisis."

First direct detection sheds light on dark galaxies

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Most people think of galaxies as huge islands of stars, gas and dust that populate the universe in visual splendor. Theory, however, has predicted there are other types of galaxies that are devoid of stars and made predominately of dense gas. These "dark" galaxies would be unseen against the black backdrop of the universe.

Now, an international team of astronomers has detected several dark galaxies by observing the fluorescent glow of their hydrogen gas, illuminated by the ultraviolet light of a nearby quasar. But what exactly are dark galaxies, and what role do they play in the evolution of our universe?

"Dark galaxies are composed of dark matter and gas, but for some reason they have not been able to form stars," said Martin Haehnelt, Kavli Institute for Cosmology at the University of Cambridge. "Some theoretical models have predicted that dark galaxies were common in the early universe when galaxies had more difficulty forming stars -- partly because their density of gas was not sufficient to form stars -- and only later did galaxies begin to ignite stars, becoming like the galaxies we see today."

Haehnelt is a member of the scientific team that detected these galaxies. According to Haehnelt, one can begin to understand the importance of dark galaxies by looking at our own Milky Way. "We expect the precursor to the Milky Way was a smaller bright galaxy that merged with dark galaxies nearby. They all came together to form our Milky Way that we see today."

Another member of the team, Sebastiano Cantalupo of the University of California, Santa Cruz, agreed that dark galaxies are the building blocks of modern galaxies. "In our current theory of galaxy formation, we believe that big galaxies form from the merger of smaller galaxies. Dark galaxies bring to big galaxies a lot of gas, which then accelerates star formation in the bigger galaxies."

The techniques used for detecting dark galaxies also may provide a new way to learn about other phenomena in the universe, including what some call the "cosmic web" -- unseen filaments of gas and dark matter believed to permeate the universe, feeding and building galaxies and galaxy clusters where the filaments intersect.

"I wonder if we can indeed use this technique to see the emission of filamentary gas in the cosmic web, and if so, how close are we to seeing that?" said team member Simon Lilly of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland. "That has been something of a Holy Grail for many, many years and I think this most recent discovery of dark galaxies is a significant step toward the goal."

The complete discussion with Drs. Haehnelt, Cantalupo and Lilly can be found at: http://www.kavlifoundation.org/science-spotlights/kicc-dark-galaxies.

Hidden Meanings in Children's Fairy Tales | World of Psychology

Hidden Meanings in Children's Fairy TalesCinderella is mistreated by her wicked stepfamily, which gives her an awfully hard time about going to the ball and meeting her Prince Charming. Dorothy finds herself following a yellow brick road as she journeys to Oz and encounters evil along the way. Alice falls down a rabbit hole into Wonderland, a completely mystical world.

Classic fairy tales are actually not as child-like as we may presume.

While some may take the stories at face value, for the sole purpose of entertainment, other researchers tell us that these are wise stories infused with meaning and symbols.

A printable version of an oral story guide (as retold by Judy Lubin) demonstrates that the tale of Cinderella signifies personal growth and transformation. As Cinderella learns to differentiate between good and bad, her new dress reflects that change, since inner change correlates with outside alteration as well.

Cinderella?s stepmother and stepsisters, who are not physically beautiful, choose not to accept Cinderella due to her outward appearance. ?When they realize that she is about to become powerful in the outside world, they mistakenly attempt to change themselves so that they will look like her on the outside,? the guide stated. ?They deform their feet to match Cinderella?s! But it does them no good, because inner beauty is what counts in this story.?

Psychologist Jonathan Young, who previously worked with renowned mythologist Joseph Campbell, dissects stories and finds symbolism in fairy tales that parallel the adult spirit. Young said Campbell helped him realize that each person stars in a production of their own life story.

Young said the journey in the Wizard of Oz represents the universal quest we all yearn for: one of compassion, courage, wisdom and a sense of home. The flying monkeys and the Wicked Witch symbolize our inner fears. Along with the dark undertones in the Wizard of Oz, tales that feature forests (such as Hansel and Gretel and Snow White) symbolize ?a place that seeks to swallow you up.?

While Young emphasized that Alice in Wonderland illustrates the importance of fantasy, he suggested that The Princess and the Frog King actually conveys the inner workings of relationships. The original story tells of the woman betraying her father?s wishes by refusing to ?repay a frog with her love.? She angrily hurls the creature against the wall. ?It?s a lot like contemporary relationships,? Young notes. ?Many important issues are worked out through argument and conflict.?

Reading up on the various meanings infused in between the lines in these old stories definitely makes me want to re-examine all of them (except the wicked witch in the Wizard of Oz). I?ll probably want to pass on being terrified seeing her green face on the television screen.

Facing the music of MP3 : Postnoon

Facing-the-music-of-MP3-postnoon-news

Gone are the days of outlets, where people used to queue up. Music stores have been reducing their carpet area and some are shutting shop.

Any technology which creates opportunities for the industry may turn disruptive at times. There is a paradigm shift in media and entertainment industry due to digitisation. Many accolades for it, be it for cutting down production costs or for opening new distribution platforms.

On the flip side, digitisation in music industry has not only brought down the music sales but is also deteriorating the music quality.

Surprisingly, the MP3 song listener could only hear from 5 per cent of the data from what is recorded at the studio. Audio CDs are better to an extent, where listener would get 15 per cent of the data of what was recorded at the studio. But, the format of audio CDs may soon vanish from the industry after due to growing demand of MP3s in the form of legal and illegal downloads.

Gone are the days of physical music outlets, where people used to queue to buy CDs. Many music stores have been reducing their carpet area and some are closing their outlets. A true music listener is finding it hard to get his favourite audio CD from a nearby store.

Sadly, even record labels are also promoting MP3 CDs which can accommodate huge number of songs in a single CD, badly affecting the quality of music. Adding to this, there is also trend of online MP3 store and streaming music culture which would make quality music a distant dream for a listener.

?This disruptive trend is spread across different music industries. However, Bollywood or western music lover can get high resolution formats for popular music ? DVD Audio, SACD and Vinyl. For a vernacular music lover, getting a high resolution audio is almost impossible as the record labels are not releasing music in any of these formats,? said G Bobby, CEO, The Audio People, Hyderabad.

?It is true that quality of music has fallen over years. There are very few genuine music lovers, who buy CDs from the stores. The audio sales are mostly driven by the star cast (hero) and sometimes a combination of a star with a composer. Around three years ago, record labels used to release three lakh copies (audio CDs) for a major star, which has now come to 15,000 copies. For small films, the numbers have fallen to 1,000 CDs, compared to 10,000 CDs three years ago. Unfortunately, the CD format is being eclipsed by MP3 and online music. At times, it is being difficult to sell 2,000 copies of a decent film audio.

?The mobile revenue, which takes 50 per cent of overall revenues in the form of caller tunes and ring tones also have fallen drastically by around 30 per cent over the last year with the aging of mobile caller tune technology. Earlier, there was a trend where people used to regularly change caller tunes or ring tones and showed their interest, but now the interest is withering with the time,? says Madhura Sreedhar, filmmaker and also a founder of leading record company, Madhura Audio.

He adds, ?However, there is always life for quality and soulful music. A good song will bring lifelong returns for the record label in terms of mobile or radio broadcasting. Growing trend of music streaming will further add to it, where in the more number of times the song is streamed, the better the revenues are for the record company. Over time, the piracy will be eradicated and the trend on legal MP3 downloads from stores will see a huge growth. Any record company with huge catalogue will emerge as a winner in long run with this opportunity.?

The online sales have become a ray of hope for the industry to bounce back and make revenues. However, the online music trend is enabling a customer to get carried away with the comfort of downloading rather than buying quality music.

Return on investment from platforms

  • Audio rights cost for a major star: Up to Rs.1 crore
  • Audio CD sales: 10 per cent
  • Mobile caller tunes and ring tones: 50 per cent
  • Online streaming, YouTube, Radio: 10 percent
  • Over the time from different platforms: 30 per cent

US states begin storm shutdown

The scale of Hurricane Sandy is clear from this satellite image

Barack Obama has warned Americans to take Hurricane Sandy seriously as authorities started shutting down the eastern seaboard ahead of its arrival.

Several states have declared emergencies, with tens of millions of people affected as schools are closed and transport services suspended.

Experts fear Sandy may become a super-storm when it makes landfall later.

Some election rallies have been called off, with Mr Obama warning affected citizens to take precautions.

International travel has been badly affected. Air France, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic grounded Monday's transatlantic flights to and from East Coast cities, including New York, Baltimore, Newark, Washington DC, Boston and Philadelphia.

Sandy has already killed 60 people as it swept through the Caribbean during the past week.

At 05:00 EDT (09:00 GMT), the storm was swirling about 385 miles (615km) south-east of New York City, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Worryingly, forecasters said its maximum sustained winds had increased to 85mph (140km/h) from 75mph recorded hours earlier.

Hurricane Sandy, dubbed "Frankenstorm", is expected to bring a "life-threatening" surge flood to the mid-Atlantic coast, including Long Island Sound and New York Harbour.

The winds are expected to strengthen when Sandy makes landfall anywhere between Virginia and southern New England on Monday.

It is expected to collide with a wintry storm from the west and a cold front from the north.

Sandy is some 520 miles (835km) across. It is also very slow, moving north-east at just 15mph, and could linger over as many as 12 states for 24-36 hours, bringing up to 25cm of rain, 60cm of snow, extreme storm surges and power cuts.

States of emergency have been declared in Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington DC and parts of North Carolina.

This gives Barack Obama a chance to appear above politics and to look presidential - but any failure would be magnified, and problems tend to get blamed on the president?

End Quote

The two presidential election contenders have modified their campaign engagements, with Mitt Romney pulling out of an event in Virginia and Mr Obama cancelling rallies in Virginia and Colorado.

The president has pulled out of a Monday event in Ohio - considered a key swing state - in order to return to Washington to monitor the storm - although he is still set to attend a rally with former President Bill Clinton in Florida earlier in the day.

Visiting the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) in Washington on Sunday, Mr Obama vowed his government would "respond big and respond fast" after Sandy had passed.

Liberty delayed

Amtrak has started suspending passenger train services across the north-eastern US and air travel has been badly hit, with some 6,800 flights cancelled.

New York City's subway, bus and train services were suspended from 19:00 (23:00 GMT) on Sunday, and schools will be shut on Monday.

With predicted storm surges of up to 11ft, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered 375,000 people in the city's vulnerable low-lying areas to leave their homes.

Evacuation shelters have been set up at 76 public schools.

"If you don't evacuate you're not just putting your own life in danger, you are also endangering lives of our first responders who would have to rescue you," he said.

BBC Weather: Hurricane Sandy forecast

The Statue of Liberty was reopened on Sunday after a year of renovation, but only a group of army cadets got a tour before it was shut again until at least Wednesday.

Some 200 National Guardsmen will patrol Manhattan and 300 more will be deployed in Long Island.

The New York Stock Exchange will be fully closed on Monday, its operator said, and possibly on Tuesday as well.

It had earlier said electronic transactions would be possible but on Sunday announced it was closing fully because "the dangerous conditions developing as a result of Hurricane Sandy will make it extremely difficult to ensure the safety of our people and communities".

Similar precautions were taken last year as Hurricane Irene approached the East Coast. It killed more than 40 people from North Carolina to Maine and caused an estimated $10bn (?6bn) worth of damage.

'Get out'

Fema has warned that the threat extends well inland, and has issued safety tips on how to cope with the hurricane.

Romney's enforced absence from the Atlantic coast has been turned by his team to his best advantage?

Blustery winds were already being felt in New York on Sunday night and the anxiety felt on the streets indicated that residents were taking city orders seriously and with haste, says the BBC's Matt Danzico in Manhattan.

In New Jersey, Governor Chris Christie confirmed a swathe of mandatory evacuations, told civil servants to stay at home on Monday and said the casinos in Atlantic City had closed.

"The weather will turn ugly [on Monday] and we want everyone off the roads," he said.

"Don't be stupid. Get out. Don't try to be a hero and act as if nothing is going on here."

New Jersey authorities expect very significant flooding, with three increasingly high tides on Monday, possibly creating surges of 13-14ft - the worst since 1903, authorities said.

Suzanne Braun Levine: Unfriending Is Hard To Do ... - Huffington Post

Like most women my age, as the years accumulate I get more and more selective about who I consider real friends, while at the same time, more and more committed to those who form my "circle of trust." The trouble is that paring down my inner circle can be hurtful, guilt-making, and very hard to initiate.

I practice the "drift" technique -- fewer calls and dates, slower responses to e-mails -- hoping that distance and silence will dissolve the tie.

This tactic has backfired more than once. The worst experience was when I saw an e-mail from the designated friend, opened it, and decided to "keep as new" rather than responding right away. I let a few days go by and to my surprise got another e-mail from the same person. It read: "I know you are there. You opened my last e-mail. Why didn't you reply!?!" Until then I had no idea that if two people were subscribers to AOL they could monitor the status of their correspondence. I could have said, "because I would like to downgrade our friendship," but of course I didn't -- and still haven't.

This is a particularly sensitive situation, because the party of the second part has really done nothing wrong. So even if I had said in a very loving way, "It's nothing you have done; we've just grown apart," she might well have replied, "I don't feel that way." And then what?

The word "unfriending" is one of the rare recent additions to the dictionary, thanks to Facebook, where the cutoff is brutal and final. In real life, though, you can't just click a friend away. You can have a heart-to-heart; you can have a disagreement and not make up; you can try a "white lie" like, "I've got to devote my time to my grandchildren/my school work/my job." How do you begin?

Breaking up with friends is not a comfortable topic of discussion among our usual advisors, for fear it would be distressing to the friend and disloyal to the prospective unfriend. Now that I am writing a book called "Why Your Girlfriends Are Good for Your Health" (especially after 50) I have an excuse to find out about how we keep, shed, and make new friends.

My research confirms the increasingly meaningful role our girlfriends play in the tumultuous new stage of life we are defining as we live it. The physiological rewards are just as vital. Female companionship -- and the laughter that always accompanies it -- releases hormones that reduce stress; that phenomenon may account for the fact that women are living longer than men. Research also suggests that as much as supportive and intimate friendships are nurturing and life-enhancing, toxic or simply tired friendships are a drain on our well-being. So unfriending is as important as a daily workout.

Recently the San Francisco chapter of The Transition Network -- a ten-year-old organization for women over 50 who want to meet like-minded women and support one another's efforts to move into a new stage of life -- announced Friendship as the topic of a monthly meeting. In preparation they sent out some "Discussion Questions," among them:

  • "What are the signs of a toxic friendship?
  • Is there a good way to end a friendship? Have you ever ended a friendship successfully?
  • Have you ever been betrayed by a female friend? Disappointed? Have you ever been replaced by a "new" best friend?

I'm told the conversation was lively; I wish I had been there.

I hope we can start our own conversation in the comment section. We can help each other find answers to the question: What is the kindest way to disengage yourself from a friend whom you don't want to spend time with now that you are downsizing your life to the people, projects, and principles that truly matter to you going forward?

Lessons from Irene help retailers cope with Sandy

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Retailers preparing for the worst of Hurricane Sandy as it hit the East Coast on Monday looked back to only a year ago to Hurricane Irene for a blueprint.

From when to get product into the region before a storm hits, to keeping track of workers when the hurricane comes, Irene provided important lessons, retailers said.

"Irene was something unprecedented last year. We learned a number of things from that," Terry Johnson, Lowe's senior vice president of store operations, told Reuters.

Irene which ranked as the fifth-costliest hurricane in U.S. history, slammed much of the U.S. East Coast last year. The lessons from that destructive hurricane have helped many chains prepare better this year.

For instance, Lowe's started deploying products like generators, tarps, batteries and electric cables to distribution centers early last week to avoid facing delays due to potential road closures. The company, the second-largest U.S. home improvement chain, started stocking up on products even before it could get a good read of the exact path of Hurricane Sandy.

"We are thinking a little bit bigger (this time)," Johnson told Reuters by phone.

Products that retailers moved closer to where the hurricane will hit also include bottled water, flashlights and dry food.

For Target Corp , the lesson from Irene was to have the products in the region five to six days in advance.

"What we've learned in responding to these in the past is finding the sweet spot in reloading the area with product," Target spokeswoman Amy Reilly said of having supplies in a region for shoppers to stock up on during a hurricane.

Hurricane Irene hit the region on the final weekend of August 2011, causing flooding and power outages during the back-to-school shopping season, one of the busiest shopping seasons of the year.

If there is good news for retailers, Hurricane Sandy is hitting in what is typically a slow time, between back-to-school and the all-important holiday shopping season.

"The timing is far enough away from any major holiday, so it's unlikely to have a meaningful impact on the overall holiday sales unless there is a catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina proportions," said Joel Bines, managing director of AlixPartners' retail practice, referring to the storm that devastated New Orleans in 2005.

Still, Target, Sears , Starbucks , Walmart , Home Depot and other closed hundreds of stores Monday as the hurricane hit.

"Every day lost for a lot of these retailers, if they're nice-to-have items, they're just sales you're just not going to get back," said Evan Gold, a senior vice president at Planalytics, which advises retailers on business weather intelligence.

Gold estimated that most major U.S. chains have at least 10 percent of their stores in Sandy's path.

Spending on generators and storm clean up is also likely to cut into budgets people have for holiday items, he said.

LOGISTICS MATTER

Irene, and other hurricanes, also taught retailers how logistics related to their employees and stores.

Sears spokesman Chris Brathwaite said that from Hurricane Irene and, more recently, Hurricane Isaac, the retailer is better able to track its workers and determine if they have been affected by the storm and needs support.

The retailer also has a better communication system in place for notification if a store is going to close.

Other retailers learned which stores could serve many customers.

"We looked very closely at store sales trends from Irene and which stores would be most essential for us to keep open to serve communities with multiple locations," said Eric Harkreader, a spokesman for drugstore chain operator Rite Aid .

"Also like Irene, we have generators positioned strategically around the storm's path in the hopes we'll be able to move in quickly and get the most essential stores back up and running quickly should they lose power," he said.

Of course, if the Internet - or the mobile device - keeps working, a big storm could benefit some retailers.

"Online ordering may be up. It is a good day to order holiday gifts if the kids aren't driving you crazy," said Al Sambar, retail strategist at consulting firm, Kurt Salmon.

Hurricane Sandy: Could it change the outcome of the presidential race?

Hurricane Sandy has scrambled the last week of the presidential race, upsetting campaign schedules, putting both President Obama and Mitt Romney off-message, and raising doubts about Election Day. In a race this close, Sandy?could change or at least postponing the results.

Hurricane Sandy has scrambled the last week of the presidential race, upsetting campaign schedules, putting both President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney off-message, and raising doubts about Election Day and how early voting is going.

It?s not out of the question that the hurricane ? a massive and unusual storm event forecast to rip into the Atlantic coast from the Del-Mar-Va peninsula to New England before barreling west across New York State and Pennsylvania en route to the all-important swing state of Ohio ? could directly affect the outcome, changing or at least postponing the results.

Maryland already has canceled early voting Monday, per Gov. Martin O?Malley?s order Sunday. Faced with power outages that could last several days, the Virginia state elections board is planning for extended early voting hours.

Both candidates have had to adjust their last-minute campaign travel plans.

Obama?canceled campaign stops Monday in Virginia and Tuesday in Colorado to monitor the storm but planned to go forward with other events Monday in Florida and Ohio, with former president Bill Clinton at his side, AP reports. Romney cut three stops in Virginia on Sunday, opting instead to campaign with running mate Paul Ryan in Ohio before heading Monday to Wisconsin, where the former Massachusetts governor has chipped away at Obama?s?lead.

TV ads can have more impact than cheerleading events with the faithful; they?ll continue as long as there?s electrical power. Both sides are flush with cash in this billion-dollar campaign.

But an ?October surprise? like this ? particularly in a very close race where the challenger has been gaining on the incumbent ? has the potential to do more damage to Obama then to Romney.

All the GOP candidate has to do is avoid the appearance that he?s taking political advantage of a potential tragedy ? something he failed to do during the early hours of the terrorist attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

But if things go wrong with the federal response to Sandy, Obama will be blamed. And the Obama camp in particular is counting on early voters and get-out-the-vote efforts come Election Day.
