National program aims to fight childhood obesity ? Fierce ...

September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, so this article by Jake Steinfeld (best known as the creator of Body by Jake, a line of fitness equipment and a syndicated TV show, and chairman of the National Foundation for Governors? Fitness Councils) is particularly appropriate. He has a ?fitness program? that he set up in California (has anyone heard of it?) and it supposedly reduced childhood obesity rates over the course of seven years.

Fighting obesity isn?t easy, and it will take a lot of helping hands to get, and keep, us on the right track. Parents, health-care providers, organizations, educators and others are key to making a positive impact in the health of our children.

In fact, all of these groups were instrumental in supporting my efforts to launch a fitness campaign in California that grew in 2011 to 1.4 million students, who all took part in a monthlong fitness challenge. Over the course of seven years, we saw a decrease in childhood obesity rates in California, and as a beneficial side effect, schools that participated in the campaign witnessed increased academic scores!

You notice, Jake doesn?t cite any numbers here ? no percentage on the decrease in childhood obesity, nor any percentage of increased academic scores. If it was so successful, why does he not quote numbers to back up his claims?

The ?California project? had such a positive impact on the health of kids that I decided to expand the program nationwide. We created the National Foundation for Governors? Fitness Councils, which is a multimillion-dollar physical fitness campaign. This newly launched program seeks to encourage and reward innovation in the field of youth fitness by awarding state-of-the-art fitness centers to schools that use new and unique methods to promote student physical activity and wellness.

Making this campaign even greater is the fact that it doesn?t rely on taxpayers or state funding. It?s fully funded through a public/private sector partnership with companies such as Coca-Cola. This year alone, we will be putting fitness centers in schools throughout Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., and Massachusetts.

Does anyone else see the irony of having private sector sponsors like Coca-Cola funding a program to end childhood obesity by awarding state-of-the-art fitness centers to schools?

The National Foundation for Governors? Fitness Councils program will roll out in Georgia within the next year, and will eventually include all 50 states. Our goal is to have fitness centers in every elementary and middle school in the United States, enabling us to help build a nation that, through innovation and a ?don?t quit? attitude, boasts the fittest and healthiest kids in the world.

Here we go with the state of Georgia again. What is it about Georgia and the kids there that these do-gooders think they have to butt in and change them? Children?s Healthcare of Atlanta wasn?t doing enough damage? Now this guy has to run in and put his two cents? worth in too?

I don?t have anything against giving schools state-of-the-art fitness centers, but exactly how are those school systems going to pay for staffing those centers when most schools can?t even afford to pay their teachers a living wage? When they can?t even afford class sizes where kids get the attention they need in order to learn? When they can?t even afford to keep art and music classes for kids?

This goes for schools in every state, and the schools that can afford those fitness centers are the ones who least need them ? schools in affluent neighborhoods, towns, and cities, whose students come from privileged families and have all the extracurricular activities that poor schools and families just can?t afford.

As the nation recognizes September as National Childhood Obesity Month, we can celebrate knowing that we are tackling this issue head-on and that the more people we get on board, the greater success we will have in making childhood obesity a thing of the past.

We know that physical activity and exercise can help prevent and treat more than 40 chronic diseases; enhance individual health and quality of life; and reduce health-care costs. And studies have shown that physical activity improves academic achievement; increases confidence and self-esteem; and reduces discipline problems.

I hate to tell him, but just because he gets kids more active doesn?t mean they?re going to get thinner. Even if kids eat healthy and exercise, even if their health might improve, that doesn?t mean they?ll lose weight (some might, some might not). And expecting to make childhood obesity a thing of the past, well, that?s an unrealistic goal. There have always been fat kids and, until someone figures out how to get rid of all the genes that contribute to a person being fat, there will always be fat kids and adults.

I?m not so sure that physical activity and exercise can help prevent and treat more than 40 chronic diseases ? it may delay the onset, it may lessen the severity, but ?prevent and treat? seems a bit strong to me. I will agree that physical activity and exercise can enhance health and quality of life, and may even reduce health care costs. As for the ?studies have shown that physical activity improves academic achievement; increases confidence and self-esteem; and reduces discipline problems,? why isn?t he citing his sources?

I could see this as being a good thing for schools, if there was also funding for staff tied to the centers and the centers were for all schools. Weight loss is not something that should be tied to the physical activity and exercise either. It should be physical activity and exercise for movement?s sake, for the fun of it, not to meet some arbitrary weight loss goal. Because how many kids are going to keep on with the activity and exercise when they don?t lose weight or meet whatever goal is set for them? Rather, this approach negates the point of the fitness centers, don?t you think?

Where are all the plus size male models?

plus size male models Where are all the plus size male models? As? female plus size models take to the catwalk, Plus Size Tall asks: where are all the plus size male models? In the modelling industry in general there are less male models than female models and this is reflected in the plus size industry. Add to that the fact that the plus size industry is a niche market, there does not seem to be budding careers for plus size male models.

Or at least, that was the findings of The Cut magazine last year who wrote an interesting article called Where Are All the Plus-Size Male Models? They found that because the market for big and tall men is so small, there is not enough work for plus size male models. Another issue for a male model is that they are paid much less then their female counterparts making the job far less lucrative. A plus size male model is generally defined as a male who is around 6?3? or taller with a size XL shirt. Therefore, those models that do find work tend to be ex athletes who are big and muscular.

plus size male models james aitken Where are all the plus size male models?

Plus size model James Richard Aitken

Another barrier to entering the male plus size model industry is the perception of what a plus size male is. Whilst women and their curves are seen as sexy, men?s curves are seen as being on their tummy and not sexy. ?Greg Chan, a men?s booker for Wilhelmina says ?Women?s ?plus size? is based on the fact that curves can be sexy. The equivalent of curves on a man is a beer gut and love handles and that?s not sexy, unless it?s the movie Hitch or something with Jack Black??

The creator of Full Figured Fashion Week New York, Gwen DeVoe, believes there are no plus size male models because the male big and tall industry is so limited that there is nothing to model. However, this does not mean that big and tall men do not want more of a fashion choice. Gwen says ?For that to happen, all kinds of men would have to vocalize an interest in fashion. Number one, we need the big and tall guys to have a louder voice, and that?s what we did with plus-size female models. Just like women, men want to see what clothes will look like on body types like their own.?

One agency who champions plus size male models is the BGM model agency who recently signed Australian plus size model James Richard Aitken who also featured in June?s Plus Model Magazine (read: Behold! The arrival of the top plus size male model, James Richard Aitken). James is breaking the plus size male model athletic stereotype. He told online magazine Jezebel ?I want to make guys who aren?t skinny or who don?t have amazing muscular bodies feel comfortable too?men also need reassuring.?

Braxton Miller helped make Urban Meyer's first game as Ohio State coach a record-breaking romp for the Buckeyes.

Meanwhile, the new era at Penn State got off to a disappointing start thanks to another team from the state of Ohio.

In Columbus, Miller rushed for 161 yards, a record for an Ohio State quarterback, and threw for two scores and 207 yards as the 18th-ranked Buckeyes beat Miami (Ohio) 56-10.

Meyer, who won two national titles at Florida, is unbeaten in 11 openers. He had worked as a TV analyst a year ago after stepping down from the Gators job due to health and family considerations.

He was hired last November to revive the beleaguered Buckeyes.

Bill O'Brien was hired by Penn State to lead the Nittany Lions in a new direction and replace the late Joe Paterno.

Penn State had an 11-point lead at the half, but Ohio quarterback Tyler Tettleton accounted for three second-half touchdowns to hand O'Brien a 24-14 loss at State College, Pa.

Matt McGloin threw for 260 yards and two touchdowns guiding Penn State's new-look offense.

There were some other changes, too: players' names on the backs of the uniforms, and blue ribbons on the back of the helmets to show support for victims of child sexual abuse.

____

No. 1 USC 49, HAWAII 10

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Marqise Lee caught a 75-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage and returned a kickoff 100 yards for a score, and No. 1 Southern California rolled.

Matt Barkley kicked off his Heisman Trophy campaign with 377 yards passing and four touchdowns, and Lee caught 10 passes for 197 yards for the Trojans (1-0), whose offensive stars were every bit as impressive as expected in their first game since their two-year NCAA bowl ban ended.

Silas Redd rushed for 57 yards and a touchdown on a team-leading nine carries in the Penn State transfer's debut at USC, which led 35-0 at halftime and coasted to its 15th consecutive season-opening victory.

Robert Woods caught six passes for 42 yards and two TDs, and tight end Xavier Grimble caught Barkley's final scoring throw in the fourth quarter.

____

No. 2 ALABAMA 41, No. 8 MICHIGAN 14

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) ? AJ McCarron threw two touchdown passes and Alabama's retooled defense showed it could still dominate.

Even after sending three starting defenders from last year's national championship team to the NFL as first-round draft picks, the Crimson Tide threw around the Wolverines while stifling and pounding dual-threat quarterback Denard Robinson.

C.J. Mosley returned an interception 16 yards for a touchdown. Dee Milliner had four pass breakups and an interception in the first half that set up a score after he shoved the intended receiver to the ground on the sideline.

This certainly wasn't what Michigan expected coming off an 11-win season under first-year coach Brady Hoke that ended with the Wolverines' first BCS victory since the 1999 season.

McCarron no longer has Trent Richardson to hand off to, but T.J. Yeldon and Eddie Lacy both ran for scores.

____

NO. 3 LSU 41, NORTH TEXAS 14

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) ? Kenny Hilliard rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns, and LSU opened its season with an easy victory.

While the heavily favored Tigers were never threatened, their performance did not always thrill a Death Valley crowd that eagerly anticipated the debut of Zach Mettenberger as starting quarterback.

Mettenberger, who was briefly sidelined by a vicious sack, was 19 of 26 for 192 yards, an interception and a touchdown. But LSU didn't really need to throw in a game decided by its overwhelming defense and a running game that accounted for 316 yards, including 123 by Alfred Blue.

Derek Thompson completed only 8 of 21 passes, but two passes were scoring strikes of 80 and 15 yards to Brelan Chancellor.

____

NO. 4 OKLAHOMA 24, UTEP 7

EL PASO, Texas (AP) ? Landry Jones threw two touchdown passes and Damien Williams ran 65 yards for another score in the fourth quarter, helping Oklahoma slog out a win.

Oklahoma labored in its opener, unable to generate much of a running game or get anything downfield.

Up just 10-7 in the fourth quarter, the Sooners stuffed UTEP on a fake punt to set up an 18-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Brannon Green and Williams sealed it late with his long run.

Nathan Jeffrey ran for 177 yards and returned a blocked punt 24 yards for a touchdown for UTEP.

____

NO. 5 OREGON 57, ARKANSAS ST. 34

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) ? Marcus Mariota made his first start, passing for 200 yards and three touchdowns in Oregon's season-opening victory over Arkansas State.

De'Anthony Thomas caught two touchdowns and ran for another while collecting 119 yards in total offense as the Ducks built a 50-10 lead by halftime.

Kenjon Barner, taking over as starter after the departure of running back LaMichael James, ran for 66 yards and two scores.

The Ducks sat most of their starters after the break.

The loss spoiled coach Gus Malzahn's first game as coach of the Red Wolves, who went 10-3 last season and won the Sun Belt Conference title.

Arkansas State senior quarterback Ryan Aplin threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns, including a 72-yard scoring pass to Julian Jones just before the half.

____

No. 6 GEORGIA 45, BUFFALO 23

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) ? Freshman Todd Gurley ran for three touchdowns, Aaron Murray threw three scoring passes and Georgia overcame a sloppy first half.

Gurley didn't start but may have emerged as the Bulldogs' future at tailback with his eight carries for 100 yards, including scoring runs of 10 and 55 yards. He added a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the first quarter.

Georgia, favored by 37? points, led only 24-16 at halftime before pulling away in the season opener for both teams.

Branden Oliver, coming off his school-record 1,395 yards rushing in 2011, had 30 carries for 111 yards and a 2-yard touchdown run for the Bulls.

____

NO. 7 FLORIDA STATE 69, MURRAY STATE 3

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) ? Lonnie Pryor, James Wilder Jr., and Debrale Smiley combined for seven rushing touchdowns to lead Florida State.

Pryor ran for three TDs, and Smiley and Wilder added two apiece. Wilder finished with 106 yards rushing.

Florida State scored on their first touch of the new season on Rashad Greene's 47-yard punt return just 89 seconds into the game.

EJ Manuel passed for 188 yards and a touchdown before retiring midway in the third quarter.

Murray State's Casey Brockman passed for 117 yards, but was intercepted once and sacked six times, including four by Bjoern Werner.

The Seminoles totaled 606 yards while holding Murray State, a Football Championship Subdivision school, to 156 yards

____

No. 10 ARKANSAS 49, JACKSONVILLE STATE 24

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) ? Tyler Wilson set the school record for yards passing in a season opener, finishing 19 of 27 passing for 367 yards and three touchdowns for Arkansas.

Two of Wilson's touchdowns went to tight end Chris Gragg, who finished with seven catches for 110 yards as the No. 10 Razorbacks (1-0) won their first game under coach John L. Smith.

Brandon Mitchell, the former backup quarterback turned starting receiver, joined in the fun with four catches for 122 yards and Javontee Herndon caught four passes for 96 yards.

The Gamecocks (0-1), coached by former Razorbacks coach Jack Crowe, led 14-7 in the first half. Marques Ivory had a pair of touchdown passes, while Alan Bonner had eight catches for 107 yards.

____

No. 11 WEST VIRGINIA 69, MARSHALL 34

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) ? Geno Smith threw for 323 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Mountaineers past Marshall.

In the final scheduled game between the state's only Bowl Subdivision teams, it marked West Virginia's highest-scoring season opener in school history.

Smith kept the momentum going from his six-TD performance from the Orange Bowl.

The senior completed 32 of 36 passes and set a school record for career completions before sitting out most of the fourth quarter

The Mountaineers compiled 655 total yards, more than any game last year, and got the balance they've sought from their running game. Shawne Alston ran for 123 yards and two scores.

___

No. 12 WISCONSIN 26, NORTHERN ILLINOIS 21

MADISON, Wis. (AP) ? Montee Ball rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown, and Wisconsin needed a big defensive play to survive a fourth-quarter scare.

Wisconsin's defense didn't allow Northern Iowa past the 50-yard line until the 4:27 mark in the third quarter ? but then the Badgers nearly melted down.

Leading 26-7 in the fourth quarter, Wisconsin allowed Northern Iowa quarterback Sawyer Kollmorgen to throw a pair of long touchdowns to David Johnson, cutting the lead to five. With the Panthers facing fourth-and-1 at the Wisconsin 41-yard line, defensive lineman Ethan Hemer tipped the ball at the line of scrimmage to stop the drive.

___

No. 14 CLEMSON 26, AUBURN 19

ATLANTA (AP) ? Andre Ellington rushed for 231 yards, DeAndre Hopkins set a school record with 13 receptions and Clemson opened the season with a victory.

Playing before a 50-50 crowd at the Georgia Dome ? basically halfway between the two campuses ? Clemson shook off any hangover from last season's embarrassing 70-33 loss to West Virginia in the Orange Bowl and showed plenty of offense against Auburn even without star receiver Sammy Watkins, who was suspended for the first two games after an offseason drug arrest.

The second half was a battle of field goals before Tajh Boyd lofted a 4-yard touchdown pass to Hopkins, who made a brilliant, twisting catch in the corner of the end zone with 9:17 remaining.

Both teams kicked four field goals. Cody Parkey connected from 37, 46, 27 and 36 yards for Auburn, the last of them putting his team ahead with 12:50 remaining. Chandler Catanzaro was just as accurate for Clemson, booting it through from 24, 40, 37 and 18 yards.

Tre Mason led Auburn in rushing with 107 yards.

____

No. 15 TEXAS 37, WYOMING 17

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? Joe Bergeron and Malcolm Brown both rushed for more than 100 yards and combined for three touchdowns to lead Texas.

Texas quarterback David Ash, who won the starting job over Case McCoy in training camp, was an efficient 20-of-27 passing for 156 yards and a touchdown to Jaxon Shipley.

Bergeron had 110 yards and scored Texas' first touchdown on a 1-yard run in first quarter. He put the game away with a 17-yard TD in the fourth. Brown ran for 105 yards for Texas (1-0).

Robert Herron had touchdown catches of 82 and 22 yards for Wyoming (0-1). Cowboys quarterback Brett Smith passed for 276 yards but threw two interceptions in the second quarter that set up Texas touchdowns.

___

No. 17 NEBRASKA 49, SOUTHERN MISS 20

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) ? Taylor Martinez threw for a career-high 354 yards and matched his best with five touchdown passes to lead Nebraska.

The Huskers won their nation-leading 27th straight opener.

Nebraska played the last three quarters without Rex Burkhead. The 1,300-yard rusher last season went out with a sprained ligament in his left knee after opening the scoring with a career-long 57-yard run.

Backup Ameer Abdullah ran 15 times for 81 yards and made an acrobatic catch for an 11-yard TD.

Southern Miss backup quarterback Anthony Alford carried 15 times for 84 yards in his first college game.

___

No. 18 OHIO STATE 56, MIAMI, OHIO, 10

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Braxton Miller threw for two scores, including Devin Smith's highlight-reel, one-handed catch, for the Buckeyes.

The slow-starting Miller, who stutter-stepped for a 65-yard score just 17 seconds into the second half, finished 14 of 24 passing for 207 yards. He also hit Corey Brown on a 5-yard TD pass.

After Miller's long run made it 28-3, Bradley Roby recovered a high Miami punt snap in the end zone and the rout was on.

Travis Howard had two interceptions and Carlos Hyde scored on 4- and 8-yard runs for Ohio State.

___

No. 19 OKLAHOMA STATE 84, SAVANNAH STATE 0

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) ? Freshman Wes Lunt completed all 11 of his passes in a brief first outing as the new starting quarterback for Oklahoma State.

The defending Big 12 champions drove for touchdowns on their first five possessions to take a 35-0 lead late in the first quarter, and then used the rest of the game as a scrimmage to get playing time for their reserves.

Joseph Randle ran for 107 yards and two TDs on just six carries and Desmond Roland added 104 yards rushing, and Jeremy Smith ran for three scores as the Cowboys opened with an all-too-easy victory after losing stars Justin Blackmon and Brandon Weeden in the first round of the NFL draft.

The lopsided result was hardly a surprise. Savannah State, one of the worst teams from a lower division, had won only four games in against Football Championship Subdivision competition in 10 years and was playing team from the FBS for the first time.

____

No. 22 KANSAS STATE 51, MISSOURI STATE 9

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) ? Collin Klein threw for 169 yards and two touchdowns, John Hubert ran 95 yards for a fourth-quarter score and Kansas State pulled away late to beat Missouri State.

Hubert finished with 152 yards rushing, Braden Wilson and Daniel Sams added touchdown runs, and Tramaine Thompson returned a punt 89 yards for another score as the Wildcats (1-0) tuned up for next week's showdown with Miami with an impressive second-half scoring binge.

The game was tied 9-9 early in the third quarter before Kansas State piled up 42 straight points against the team picked to finish last in the Missouri Valley Conference.

____

No. 23 FLORIDA 27, BOWLING GREEN 14

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) ? Mike Gillislee had a career-high 148 yards rushing and two touchdowns, helping Florida beat Bowling Green.

The performance was far from perfect for the Gators, who struggled part of the game on offense and failed to generate much pressure on defense. Still, it was enough for Florida to win its 23rd consecutive opener. The streak is the second longest in the nation behind Nebraska (27).

The Gators can thank Gillislee, Frankie Hammond and two missed field goals for the latest one.

Gillislee scored on runs of 15 and 38 yards in the second quarter. Hammond turned a short pass into a 50-yard score early in the fourth. Bowling Green could have had a second-half lead, but fifth-year senior Stephen Stein missed field-goal attempts of 31 and 29 yards.

Mice 'smell again' after therapy

Gene therapy has been used to give mice born without a sense of smell the ability to sniff their surroundings, an international team of researchers say.

The mice had a genetic disease which affected microscopic hairs in their body - called cilia - which can detect chemicals in the air.

Researchers hope their findings will lead to treatments for diseased cilia, which can cause blindness, deafness and kidney disease in people.

The study is in Nature Medicine.

Microscopic cilia stick out from many cells in the body. A range of genetic disorders called ciliopathies result in damaged cilia which can be fatal or severely debilitating. One symptom can be a lifetime without a sense of smell, called congenital anosmia.

Gene therapy

A groups of researchers, lead by the University of Michigan, looked at mice with a mutation in their Ift88 gene, which meant they struggled to produce cilia and could not smell.

The group created a virus which was capable of infecting cells with a working version of the Ift88 gene. This was injected into the nose on three consecutive days. This was able to restore the cilia and a sense of smell.

Prof Philip Beales from University College London was involved in the study. He told the BBC: "It is a proof of concept that has shown we can get that gene back into these cells, produce the right protein, produce cilia and function as expected.

He said the mice were then able to use their sense of smell to seek out food. However, it is hoped a similar approach could be used for other symptoms of the disorders.

Dr James Battey, director of the US National Institute on Deafness and Other Communications Disorders which part funded the research said: "These results could lead to one of the first therapeutic options for treating people with congenital anosmia.

"They also set the stage for therapeutic approaches to treating diseases that involve cilia dysfunction in other organ systems, many of which can be fatal if left untreated."

6 Relationship Principles from 30 Years of Marriage | Care2 Healthy ...

Written by Scott Means for YourTango

My lovely wife and I will be celebrating 30 years of marriage this week.

We?ve had a fantastic journey, with our share of ups and downs, plenty of romance mixed in with rocky times, lots of joy, and a few painful challenges, but all in all we are delighted with the life we?ve shared together so far.

We are continually amazed at how each year finds us closer and more in love than the year before, and although it is hard to imagine, we both feel that the best years of our marriage are yet to come. That?s how I think it should be.

Sadly, I often see marriage portrayed as all downhill after the honeymoon. I hate to hear couples reminisce about the early years of young love, mourning as if the best days are over and gone. I was further disturbed by several articles I read recently that suggest the seven-year itch has now become the three-year itch.

So is less sex, more fights, poorer communication, and drifting apart really the inevitable? With a nod to the movie Date Night, is it really just a matter of time before couples settle for becoming just ?excellent roommates??

I say no!

Whether you have been together six months or six decades, it is possible to see your future as one filled with excitement, passion, and great potential. I would like to share with you a few key principles that my wife and I have discovered as we have endeavored to keep our relationship vibrant and fresh over the past 30 years.

1. Look at Your Past Thankfully

Stay in awe of your spouse, the love you share, and the life you have built together through good times and tough times. Remain thankful for who your spouse is, and remind yourself of the reasons you were drawn to him or her in the first place. Gratitude keeps you focused on what is good in your relationship and helps keep resentment from building up.

Thankfulness is a habit that has to be cultivated rather purposefully. It is pretty easy to find problems to complain about, to fixate on missing components of your marriage, or dwell on your frustrations. However, you can totally shift the atmosphere between you by keeping your mind on the positive and by daily telling your spouse something you are thankful for about your relationship.

2. Look at Your Future Expectantly

It is great to fondly reflect on the good times of your past, but it?s not healthy to fixate on some idealized notion that things would be better if you could somehow go back to how it used to be. Instead, choose to believe that the best is always ahead of you. Whether you have been through rough patches or have sailed through blissfully, expect your future to beat anything you have had before.

It really is possible for you to have more passion, deeper intimacy, new levels of trust, and an infinite variety of untried adventures ahead of you. Just decide to go for it, and then relentlessly pursue each other for life.

Navajo Family Overjoyed to Receive 200th Home From IRT ...

On August 16 in Gallup, New Mexico, incoming residents of the 200th house built free-of-charge by Operation Footprint for local, less fortunate Navajo families cut a red ribbon in honor of the service. Operation Footprint is a Department of Defense Innovative Readiness Training (IRT) mission created to improve military readiness while filling a community need.

?The military is fighting for our country, but I never knew they would help build homes too,? said Vera Vecenti-Hoskie, who received the new home with her husband Jimmy Hoskie and their daughter Regina. ?I am thankful for them. We were very cold and freezing, but have better living conditions now!?

While the couple expressed excitement to have a stove, refrigerator and appliances, they were most grateful to have running water, reported the Air National Guard Readiness Center.

Operation Footprint constructed and furnished the homes for underserved Navajo families throughout the Gallup region. In related efforts to increase the quality of life in the area, the Operation also provided waterlines, upgrades and reconstruction of the St. Michaels Association for Special Education in Window Rock, Arizona.

The relationship not only benefits the Navajo recipients; it is designed to help train the military.

?Instead of the community thanking the military, we would like to thank you for bringing the military into your community and providing them with training that Reserve and Guard members might not otherwise get,? said Col. Scott Sauter from the Office of the Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs to attendees at the ribbon cutting. ?Thank you for the opportunity to train for readiness so that [the military] may provide the freedoms we enjoy each day.?

Attendees of the ribbon-cutting ceremony included: leaders and members of the IRT, Air National Guard, Veterans Administration, Southwest Indian Foundation, Navajo Housing Authority and other military-affiliated organizations and local agencies.

?Today is about honoring this land, this home, and this family and to celebrate that they will be allowed the opportunity to grow to see their grandchildren reach new heights,? said Roberta Roberts, the public relations director for the Navajo Housing Authority.

The Hoskie family shared their deep appreciation. ?People from all over the world have come to help us and that?s truly a blessing!? said Hoskie.

?All of my days, I could see the outside world with their modern home and modern facilities,? said Vecenti-Hoskie. ?I prayed that my family would have that someday and boy, that prayer was answered today.?
