Military riders mount up for charity

A barrage of motorcycle riders roared into Thrifty Foods in Parksville on Saturday to enjoy a free lunch while raising money for charity.

The group was part of the Military Police National Motorcycle Relay Ride and were on a local leg of the journey across Canada, from Comox to Victoria.

Thrifty Foods sponsors the group?s lunch every year.

The two charities benefiting from the ride are the Military Police Fund for Blind Children and the Children?s Wish Foundation of Canada.

Leader of the ride and Petty Officer Second Class George Robinson said the group is made up of a mix of civilians and both retired and active military personnel.

The ride takes place throughout July and August, with each region doing their own leg of the ride.

Robinson said personally he loves riding a motorcycle and feels it?s important to raise money for children in need.

?There are a lot of children in need who don?t have a voice or the ability to raise the money we can raise,? Robinson said.

Last year Robinson said the Ride raised $35,000 and this year they hope to raise $100,000 across Canada.

Pakistan to push for intel share at U.S. talks

DUBAI (Reuters) - Pakistan's spy chief will call for an end to U.S. drone strikes in its tribal areas bordering Afghanistan and push for a sharing of technology and intelligence during a visit to Washington this week, the country's interior minister said on Monday.

Lieutenant-General Zaheer ul-Islam's visit to meet CIA director General David Petraeus will be his first since he became head of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in March and follows a thaw in relations between Pakistan and the United States.

Pakistan, however, continues to insist U.S. drone strikes - which it says are a breach of its sovereignty - must end.

"We will push for no drones. If we (Pakistan and the U.S.) are partners, we should sit together and have a common strategy. However, in this regional war there has been no common strategy against a common enemy," Interior Minister Rehman Malik told a news conference in Dubai.

"I hope the visit of the director of the ISI will have good results. There is some dialogue going on as we speak," he said.

The United States has given no sign it is willing to halt the drone strikes.

"Both countries have to find a mid-way," Malik told reporters. "This of course means intelligence-sharing. Also, give us the technology and we will use it. The U.S. has given us F16s. Are we misusing it?"

He gave no further details but Pakistan has long asked the United States to provide it with its own drones for use in its tribal areas.

"She's a strong gymnast," teammate McKayla Maroney said. "She can turn it around in two seconds."

Wieber will get two days.

"I'm very sad, but I'm very happy about the other girls," Karolyi said. "Hard work pays off ... we support Jordyn, but things happen."

Social Scientists Might Gain Access to Facebook's Data on User Behavior

Social scientists hungry for Facebook?s data may be about to get a taste of it. Nature has learned that the social-networking website is considering giving researchers limited access to the petabytes of data that it has amassed on the preferences and behaviour of its almost one billion users.

Outsiders will not get a free run of the data, but the move could quell criticism from social scientists who have complained that the company?s own research on its users cannot be verified. Facebook's in-house scientists have been involved in publishing more than 30 papers since 2009, covering topics from what drives the spread of information and ideas to the relationship between social-networking activity and loneliness. However, because the company fears breaching its users? privacy, it does not release the underlying raw data.

Facebook is now exploring a plan that could allow external researchers to check its work in future by inspecting the data sets and methods used to produce a particular study. A paper currently submitted to a journal could prove to be a test case, after the journal said that allowing third-party academics the opportunity to verify the findings was a condition of publication.

?We want to participate in the scientific process and we believe that there should be a way to have other researchers validate [our studies] without infringing on the policies that we have set with our users,? says Cameron Marlow, head of Facebook's data-science team.

Restricted access
If the scheme were to go ahead, it would apply to papers after publication. Scholars would have to travel to the company?s headquarters in Menlo Park, California, because Facebook would not risk sending the data electronically, and they would have access to aggregated data only, and no personally identifiable information. The company would also allow access for only a limited period ? and contingent upon researchers signing a non-disclosure agreement. Marlow says, however, that these conditions should not keep researchers from being openly critical about matters related to the published paper such as technique or data processing.

External scholars would not be allowed to conduct their own studies on the data sets.

The alternative ? publicly releasing anonymized raw data sets ? is not likely to be an option, says Facebook. Internet company AOL, based in New York, and film rental and streaming firm Netflix, based in Los Gatos, California, have both done this in the past, only for researchers to show that individuals could be identified in the anonymized data. ?It is hard to really guarantee that it is anonymous,? says Marlow.

Facebook's proposals are a step in the right direction, say researchers. ?Their intentions are very good,? agrees Bernardo Huberman, director of the social-computing group at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in Palo Alto, California. Huberman has voiced concerns in Nature about the lack of researcher access to 'big data' at private companies. Facebook ?wants to get closer to something that is the scientific method?, he says.

But Huberman and others have practical concerns. The requirement for on-site visits will hinder many researchers, with few likely to receive? funding to travel to merely validate a completed study. Furthermore, it is unclear whether Facebook will allow researchers to validate research by running their own programs on the data. If scientists are restricted to repeating Facebook researchers? own analyses, says Anatoliy Gruzd, director of the social-media lab at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, ?they may be unknowingly repeating the same errors inherent in a technique?.

Everyone, meet Mycoplasma genitalium, the subject of many scientific papers, even more vists to the clinic and now the first organism to be entirely recreated in binary. Computer models are often used for simplicity, or when studying the real thing just ain't viable, but most look at an isolated process. Stanford researchers wanted to break with tradition and selected one of the simplest organisms around, M. genitalium, to be their test subject. They collated data from over 900 publications to account for everything going on inside the bacterial cell. But it wasn't just a case of running a model of each cellular process. They had to account for all the interactions that go on -- basically, a hell of a lot of math. The team managed to recreate cell division using the model, although a single pass took almost 10 hours with MATLAB software running on a 128-core Linux cluster. The representation was so accurate it predicted what M. genitalium looks like, just from the genetic data. And, despite the raft of research already conducted on the bacterium, the model revealed previously undiscovered inconsistencies in individual cell cycles. Such simulations could be used in the future to better understand the complicated biology of diseases like cancer and Alzheimer's. Looks like we're going to need more cores in that cluster. Naked man who protested TSA found not guilty

A man who stripped at a TSA checkpoint in Oregon was acquitted of indecent exposure charges. KGW's Abbey Gibb reports.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A man arrested after he stripped naked at Portland International Airport (PDX) was found not guilty of public indecency at a trial Wednesday.

John Brennan, a frequent-flying businessman from Portland, set off an explosives wand in April and stripped naked to show Transportation Security Administration screeners he was not carrying a bomb.

At Wednesday's trial, TSA officer Steven Vangordon testified that "he started taking clothes off quickly, I mean he whipped them off pretty fast."

Brennan took the stand early in the afternoon, saying he believed he had the right to be naked.

"I know the irony of taking off my clothes to protect my privacy," Brennan said. "They're getting close to seeing us naked, so I thought I'd up the ante," he testified.

Brennan said removing all his clothes was not premeditated. The frequent traveler who had heard of many TSA issues while on prior business travels was just fed up as he set off the detector at PDX.

"The machine went off, and I asked what it was and he said 'nitrates' which I know from Oklahoma City is one of the explosive ingredients," Brennan told KGW in an earlier interview, "and I was not interested in being hassled so I took off my clothes to show them I was not carrying any explosives."

TSA spokeswoman Sari Koshetz told KGW, "TSA partners with the traveling public to screen all passengers safely and efficiently. When a passenger chooses to be purposefully disruptive, we notify law enforcement. "

A Port of Portland Police report said Brennan was asked several times to put his clothes back on. Two screening lanes were closed for a short time until Brennan was wrapped in a towel and arrested.

A judge found Brennan not guilty of public indecency on the grounds that he stripped naked as a form of protest, which is protected speech.

But things aren?t over for Brennan yet. The TSA is also investigating to see if he possibly interfered with the screening process. If they find him guilty, he could be forced to pay an $11,000 fine and be put on the no-fly list.
